Reliance Jio has made its JioPC cloud computing service available as a standalone offering in India. Previously limited to JioHome broadband users, JioPC can now be accessed by users regardless of their telecom or broadband provider, provided they have an internet connection.

What Is JioPC and How Does It Work?

JioPC is a cloud PC and desktop-as-a-service platform. Instead of upgrading an older computer's internal hardware, users can access a virtual machine running on Jio's cloud network.

Jio says the service can run on existing computers and provides cloud-based computing power. Its standalone availability removes the previous requirement of being a JioHome broadband subscriber.

The service is intended to make an older computer more capable by shifting computing resources to the cloud. This could be useful for users who have ageing laptops or desktops but do not want to replace them solely for access to more capable computing resources.

Depending on the subscription, users get either 8 GB RAM and 500 GB storage or 16 GB RAM and 1 TB storage. Jio's service page says JioPC operates through a virtual machine and includes an Ubuntu/Linux interface.

It comes pre-loaded with LibreOffice and supports web-based applications, including Microsoft 365, along with design tools such as Adobe Express. The service is also designed to work with existing screens and peripherals.

Additionally, the JioPC infrastructure is also marketed as being "built for AI", compatible with the likes of ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Studio and NotebookLM.

JioPC Plans and Prices in India

Jio is offering JioPC in two tiers, namely, JioPC and JioPC Ultra. The standard plan provides 8 GB of RAM and 500 GB of storage, while the Ultra tier increases these to 16 GB RAM and 1 TB storage.

Here's a rundown of the current plans:

The plans effectively give users access to computing resources hosted in the cloud rather than relying entirely on the hardware inside their existing computer.

With JioPC now available as a standalone service, users no longer need to be tied to JioHome to access a cloud-based PC. The service could be a useful option for those looking to get more out of older hardware without immediately replacing their existing computer.
