Samsung has officially unveiled One UI 9 based on Android 17 at the Galaxy Unpacked 2026 event, debuting on its latest foldable lineup. The update brings a refined design language, expanded privacy controls and heavy productivity updates, starting with the newly launched Galaxy Z Fold 8 series and Z Flip 8 and will eventually trickle down to more smartphones.
One UI 9 Stable Update: New AI, Privacy and Productivity Features
While One UI 9's visual experience pretty much remains the same, certain elements receive a slight overhaul. There's a modern, glassier translucent background blur across the system, resulting in a more seamless look across the user interface.
Starting with the major changes, the Quick Settings panel is now fully customisable, allowing users to freely rearrange controls and resize the brightness and volume sliders. The sound mode toggle has been separated for greater flexibility.
Coming to the lock screen, the media player has been refreshed with circular control buttons, live waveform animations, and a dynamic seek bar that adapts to the colour palette of the playing album art.
Samsung is also enhancing productivity and utility with improvements to its core apps. For starters, Samsung Notes introduces a digital Tape feature, acting as a redaction tool that lets users conceal sensitive text or visuals before sharing screenshots.
Besides the native Contacts app, users can now generate personalised AI profile cards directly using Creative Studio prompt inputs. For gamers, there's an enhanced Game Booster overlay that allows for quick adjustments to resolution and performance modes without leaving the active game session.
Samsung DeX gains quick virtual desktop switching, while Quick Share introduces an NFC-based Tap to Share function for instantaneous file transfers. The update also delivers major accessibility upgrades, including a Text Spotlight tool for enlarging text in a floating window and an enhanced Select to Speak function.
That said, One UI 9 is also gaining some Android 17 features, including a better Theft Detection mode and enhanced Advanced Protection alongside Factory Reset Protection. There's also a new power menu security feature for better protection against theft.
For privacy and security, there's a new blue status bar indicator that provides complete location access transparency by alerting users whenever location, camera or microphone is active.
There's also a new unified Warranty and Care Hub app, which is also included to offer automated diagnostic checks and repair estimates. Finally, explicitly built for foldables like the new Galaxy Z Fold 8, a Foreign Material Detection feature warns users if dust or debris is preventing the device hinge from closing completely.
While the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Z Fold 8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip 8 come with One UI 9 out of the box, other One UI 9 eligible smartphones like the Galaxy S26 series should eventually receive the update, so stay tuned.
