Xiaomi is preparing to introduce a major first with its upcoming Xiaomi 18 Fold. The company has confirmed that its new foldable will be the first smartphone to feature CXMT’s LPDDR6 memory, bringing China’s next-generation DRAM technology to a commercial phone for the first time.

The announcement comes as ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) confirms via a Weibo post that its LPDDR6 memory has entered mass production. Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun also took to Weibo to congratulate CXMT on the milestone.

Additionally, Jun also revealed that the Xiaomi XRING O3 is the first mobile chipset to support CXMT’s LPDDR6, while the Xiaomi 18 Fold will be the first phone equipped with it.

CXMT’s LPDDR6 memory can reportedly reach 12,800 Mbps data-transfer speeds, offering a notable increase over LPDDR5X. The newer memory standard is also designed to improve power efficiency while delivering higher bandwidth for demanding applications, including on-device AI.

Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 is also expected to support LPDDR6 memory, but it will likely rely on chips from SK Hynix, Samsung, or Micron.

This makes the Xiaomi 18 Fold an important launch for Xiaomi. Not to mention that the move is also significant for CXMT, which has been expanding its presence in the DRAM market. The chipmaker only recently moved into mass production of LPDDR5 memory and has now progressed to the newer LPDDR6 standard.

The company has opened pre-reservations for the Xiaomi 18 Fold in China, confirming Leica co-engineered cameras.

We have also seen the Xiaomi 18 Fold in leaked real-world images, which show a wide-foldable design and a triple-camera setup housed in a prominent rear camera island.
