Summary

  • The Apple A18 scored 1,790,331 points in the AnTuTu benchmark.
  • On Geekbench, the 6-core A18 CPU delivered an impressive performance, scoring 3,254 in single-core and 8,070 in multi-core.
  • In the 3DMark graphics test, the 5-core A18 GPU fell a bit short of expectations.

Notes

We benchmarked the Apple A18 processor running on the iPhone 16.

Last year, Apple released the A18 chipset, which powers the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus. The iPhone 16e also packs the A18 processor, but with one fewer GPU core. Nevertheless, we evaluated the A18 on a series of benchmarks, including AnTuTu, Geekbench, 3DMark, etc., to judge the CPU and GPU performance. On that note, let's dive into the results.

Apple A18 AnTuTu Score

In our first AnTuTu benchmark, the Apple A18 scored 1,790,331 points, falling short of touching the 2-million mark. However, the 6-core CPU scored an impressive 716,493 points, and the 5-core GPU achieved 596,039 points. While Apple is not known for chasing benchmark numbers, the A18 CPU is plenty powerful and more efficient than the competition.

Apple A18 Geekbench Score

In the Geekbench 6 CPU test, the A18 shines, scoring 3,254 in single-core tasks and 8,070 in multi-core tasks. With just six CPU cores, of which four are efficiency cores, Apple managed to breach the 8,000 mark in multi-core performance. Not only that, the single-core performance is the highest among all the flagship mobile processors out there.

Now, let's move to the 3DMark benchmark, which measures GPU performance. The 5-core GPU inside the A18 achieved the best loop score of 3,817 in the 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Stress test and its stability stood at a respectable 66.3%.

In the GPU department, Apple has been lagging behind the competition lately, and the same trend continues with the A18. That's not to say that the GPU performance is poor, but rivals have made significant strides and now hold a significant lead.

Similarly, in the 3DMark Solar Bay test, the A18 GPU scored 6,645 with an average of 25.3 FPS. And in the intensive 3DMark Steel Nomad Light test, the A18 scored 1,453 with an average FPS of 10.8. It shows that the 5-core GPU is capable enough for intense gaming, but doesn't match the competition.

Apple A18 Speedometer 3.0 Score

In the Speedometer 3.0 benchmark, which measures the CPU performance in web browsing, the A18 scored a remarkable 32.8 points. It's one of the highest scores achieved by a mobile processor, outranking all the competition. In tandem, the A18 delivers a smooth and responsive web browsing experience.

The Verdict

To sum up, the Apple A18 processor offers the best CPU performance in the industry and excellent efficiency in terms of performance-per-watt. However, its 5-core GPU disappoints slightly as it doesn't perform along the lines of flagship offerings like Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite and MediaTek's Dimensity 9400. That said, the A18 is a solid all-around chipset and can handle any kind of workload with ease.
