Google has kicked off the next Android 17 quarterly release, as the Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1 is now out for Pixel phones. While it's light on big features, it gives us a first peek at where things are headed ahead of a stable launch expected in March 2027.
Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1: What's New?
One of the highlight additions is a new Notes tile in Quick Settings, but it's a Pixel 11 exclusive feature for now. Google has already switched on Notes shortcuts for the lock screen and home screen on the newest Pixel phones in an earlier QPR2 beta and those still haven't reached the Pixel 10 in this build.

The status bar also gets a small visual refresh. The VPN icon is bolder, the silent mode icon now matches the one in the volume panel, and a few icons, including Bluetooth and Airplane Mode, are slightly bigger. These tweaks first showed up in the Android 17 QPR1 stable release and it now looks like Google intended them all along.

There are also clues that Pixel 11's AI features could extend to older phones. After installing the beta, the Pixel 10 shows the Gemini Intelligence boot animation that was previously exclusive to the Pixel 11 series.
Meanwhile, a Proactive Assistance option has also turned up in the Settings app, sitting above Magic Cue, though it doesn't appear in the Gemini app's settings. A similar entry popped up in an earlier QPR2 beta before disappearing, so it may not stick around.
Most of the Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1 update is about stability. Google has fixed 20 issues, including a freeze when unlocking with the fingerprint sensor. The update also addresses a crash when changing a Face Unlock setting and an eSIM profile that quietly switched itself off.
Connectivity has been tidied up too. The update fixes a crash loop that could wipe out cellular service and a problem where Wi-Fi wouldn't reconnect on its own. The issue where Bluetooth audio would cut out on LHDC v5 devices when a second connected device dropped off has also been fixed. There's also a fix for idle battery drain tied to the Flip to Shh feature.
Other fixes cover app freezes on launch, missing app previews in Recents and oversized spacing between icons in the app drawer. With the Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1 update, NFC tag detection stops failing after the first scan and a camera bug is gone that turned the video feed 90 degrees on external displays in desktop mode. The front camera also works again while you're screen recording.

The Android Emulator also gets support for the latest beta update. Moreover, while the Pixel 11 models get build DP11.260918.005, every other device gets DP11.260918.006.
To try it, enrol your phone in the Android Beta Program and you'll receive the update over the air by heading over to Settings -> System -> Software updates.
You can report bugs through the Android Beta Feedback app. As a QPR release, it doesn't bring app-impacting API changes, so it's mostly about polish rather than big changes.
There's a catch if you want to leave the beta. If you'd rather wait for the stable Android 17 QPR2 release, opt out of the program now and don't install this update. Leave after installing it and your phone will be wiped. A "downgrade" update will show up when you opt out, and you should ignore it.
Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1 won't change how you use your Pixel, but it does clean up a lot of lingering annoyances and hints at AI features coming to older Pixel phones. With the stable version still months away, expect more betas and more clues before it lands.
