Earlier last year, reports of a wacky AirPods Pro patent showed up at the US Patent Office, managing to attract a lot of attention. Fitted with cameras, the new generation of AirPods is built on the idea of adding low-resolution cameras to gather data for AI processing. Now, in 2026, the idea inches closer to reality as reports indicate AirPods Pro with cameras have entered the final testing phase.
AirPods with Cameras Enter Completion Phase
As per Mark Gurman's latest industry report for Bloomberg, Apple is reportedly in the final stage of the upcoming AirPods Pro with cameras. The Cupertino brand has allegedly finalised the design and features of the AirPods and it could enter mass production in 2026 itself.

However, a large part of the new generation of AirPods' success depends on the success of the Gemini-powered Siri. This is because the cameras on the AirPods Pro will be solely used to capture the user's surroundings and feed the data for AI processing, particularly visual intelligence.
We have already heard iOS 27 is prepping Visual Intelligence in Siri via the camera app. Hence, with a dedicated hardware-level implementation, Apple is eyeing a cohesive AI ecosystem which ties into the brand's broader plan for Apple Intelligence.

As for the AirPods themselves, Gurman claims they won't be too different in design from the AirPods Pro 3. Aside from a slightly larger stem, the added cameras and a small LED indicator, they will look identical to the current AirPods design.
However, there is a chance Apple will not brand it as the AirPods Pro 4 and rather call it the AirPods Ultra. This is again part of Apple's broader strategy to launch several "Ultra"-branded products, including the Apple iPhone Ultra (Apple iPhone Fold), MacBook Ultra and iPad Ultra.
That said, it is still unclear when exactly Apple plans to bring the AirPods Pro with cameras to the market. Since a large part of its existence depends on the success of Siri and, in particular, Visual Intelligence, it is fair to assume that the iPhone-maker will hold out till it gathers conclusive data and evidence of the feasibility of camera-fitted AirPods Pro.
