Apple has seeded the iOS 26.6 Release Candidate update to eligible iPhones, after releasing the iOS 26.6 developer beta 4 update earlier this month. The RC iOS 26.6 update ties all the beta and public builds together to optimise the system before the iOS 26.6 stable release.
iOS 26.6 Release Candidate Update Makes Way for iOS 27
As reported by 9to5Mac, the iOS 26.6 Release Candidate update will enable extended Spotlight indexing to ensure a smooth and hiccup-free iOS 27 stable release. The official iOS 26.6 RC update changelog reads: "This update includes bug fixes, security updates and optimises the Spotlight index to prepare for iOS 27."
For those unaware, Apple uses Spotlight indexing on iPhones to process device data in the background to scan, organise and catalogue it for a searchable universal database. With the iOS 27 developer beta 1 update, developers reported unusually long Spotlight indexing times.

Hence, to ensure that isn't the case when stable iOS 27 releases in September 2026 with new iPhones, the Cupertino brand is using the iOS 26.6 RC update for most of the heavy lifting. This is in addition to the security and bug fixes and system enhancements that the new update brings to iOS 26-supported devices.
Aside from this, the iOS 26.6 Release Candidate update also carries forward the Blocked Contacts Limit alert feature from previous iOS 26.6 developer and public beta builds. This helps users know when they have reached the blocked contacts limit via a text warning. The limit currently sits between 8,000 and 20,000 blocked contacts on Apple iPhones.
That said, the iOS 26.6 Release Candidate update is currently rolling out to eligible devices, all the way from the iPhone 11 to the iPhone 17e. Users can download and install the new version by navigating to Settings > General > Software Update > Update Now.
