Apple's first foldable iPhone Ultra is expected to debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max launch in September 2026. However, new information suggests that even if the foldable does launch alongside, getting your hands on one may take considerably longer depending on where you live.
According to Australian publication ChannelNews, Apple may not immediately make the iPhone Fold, aka the iPhone Ultra, available in every market. The report, citing a major Chinese component supplier, claims that supply, pricing and production testing issues could delay the foldable's wider availability.
The report further claims that carriers and a major Australian retailer have been told the foldable will not be available when the rest of the iPhone 18 lineup arrives in the country. Apple is instead said to be prioritising the US initially, followed by key markets such as China.
Going by that, Apple could announce the iPhone Ultra globally but take a phased approach to actually selling it.
The reported delays appear to be linked to the complexity of producing Apple's first foldable. Suppliers reportedly told the publication that Apple has encountered more problems than expected during production verification testing, particularly around the foldable's hinge and display.
Previously, the iPhone Ultra mass production was expected to begin in July but was reportedly pushed to August 2026.
Then just last month, reports suggesting an iPhone Ultra launch delay surfaced online. As per the report, Foxconn was still said to be adjusting its production plans in late July, with additional engineering validation potentially pushing the timeline back by another two months.
Apple is also reportedly planning to produce only around seven million iPhone Ultra units in the second half of 2026. That would be relatively limited for a flagship iPhone and could make a broad simultaneous rollout difficult.
Interestingly, the report also suggests Apple may not reveal the foldable's price at the September event. The iPhone Ultra price is widely expected to be exorbitant and upward of $2,500 (approximately Rs 2,38,500).
India's growing importance to Apple's manufacturing operations may not necessarily translate to day-one availability for the iPhone Ultra. Unlike the iPhone Air, which Apple began manufacturing in India in the same year as its launch, the iPhone Ultra is reportedly not expected to be manufactured in India during its initial production run due to technical complexities.
Meanwhile, production of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max is reportedly ramping up in India through Foxconn and Tata Electronics, primarily to support demand in international markets.
Counterpoint Research expects (via MoneyControl) India to account for around 26% of global iPhone production in 2026, compared to just 6% four years ago. Even with that growing manufacturing footprint, Apple could still keep its most complicated new product limited to select markets at launch.
The reported availability delay doesn't necessarily mean the iPhone Ultra itself won't be announced in September. Apple has followed a similar strategy before. The iPhone X was unveiled in September 2017 but went on sale several weeks later, giving the company additional time to ramp up production.
For now, Apple has yet to confirm the iPhone Ultra's name, launch date, price or availability. We do know that Apple employees call it the iPhone Ultra internally, so maybe that could be the final name? Only time will tell.
