The HDMI Forum has released the official specifications of the HDMI 2.2 standard after announcing it earlier this year at CES 2025. The new version will come in the form of Ultra96 cables, bringing support for higher video resolutions, frame rates and bandwidth, later this year.
In their official press release, the HDMI Forum announced the release of the HDMI 2.2 specification. Its key highlight is that it can achieve up to 16K resolution at 60Hz, 10K at 120Hz, 8K at 240Hz, and 4K at 480Hz. For uncompressed full-chroma 4:4:4 formats with 10-bit and 12-bit colour, it will be able to provide resolutions of 4K at 240Hz and 8K at 60Hz.

The new standard now offers twice the bandwidth of HDMI 2.1 with support for up to 96 Gbps. This along with their new Fixed Rate Link technology, make sure "support a native video format in the best way possible". This technology will provide stable audio and video transmission at the higher bandwidths that the new HDMI version now supports.

With the new standard, the HDMI Forum introduces "Ultra 96" as the feature name for all cables that support the latest standard. HDMI 2.2 also offers a new Latency Indication Protocol (LIP) which helps fix latency and sync issues for audio and video when a device is connected to soundbars and external speakers.
