Summary

  • Apple is reportedly set to add an anti-reflective display to the iPhone 17 Pro models.
  • This layer could potentially reduce reflections and improve scratch resistance to make the iPhones more durable.
  • It's highly likely that the iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 Air won't get the anti-reflective glass upgrade.

Apple is preparing for its iPhone 17 series launch later this year in September, and we've seen plenty of leaks and rumours about the design and internals. A new report now sheds light on the iPhone 17 Pro models' displays, that are now expected to equip an anti-reflective layer for a better viewing experience.

According to MacRumors, Apple is readying the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max with a new anti-reflective display glass that might help provide a better viewing output than the previous generations. The publication was able to obtain this information from a "reliable source" who have divulged that Apple's suppliers have successfully achieved high yield on the anti-reflective glass for mass production.

The report further adds that this anti-reflective glass will potentially be more scratch-resistant than Apple's existing Ceramic Shield glass. The current iPhone lineup comes with an oleophobic-coated layer that Apple says is resistant to fingerprints, but it doesn't prevent reflections like the displays seen on recent MacBooks and iPads.

It's important to note that while the Pro models are getting this upgraded display, the standard iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air may probably miss out. It's a bummer, especially, for the ultra-thin Air model, which appears to be targeted for niche buyers. Since the iPhone 17 Air is reportedly getting a titanium frame, it would have made more sense adding the anti-reflective layer to this model for enhancing its durability further.

With Samsung using Gorilla Glass Armor to reduce reflections on its high-end phones, this move from Apple could help get the upcoming iPhone displays updated with the latest standards for improved viewing and outdoor usage. The Cupertino company is reportedly set to announce the iPhone 17 series in September 2025, so we'll know more about these displays and more details in the coming weeks.
