Indian telecom operator Reliance Jio and American carrier provider T-Mobile have completed what they describe as the world's first 5G Standalone roaming connection. Both brands have partnered to enable 5G SA roaming through Syniverse, a company known for providing an interconnection platform that networks use to talk to each other across borders.
T-Mobile Customers Can Now Enjoy 5G SA While Roaming
According to Jio and T-Mobile, 5G SA roaming brings faster speeds, lower latency and more reliable connections for international travellers. The use cases pointed out go beyond standard network connectivity.
Both brands say that enabling cross-border 5G SA roaming will allow Internet of Things (IoT) devices to stay connected to reliable high-speed networks when they move between countries. The partnership is also said to enable lag-free and seamless real-time communication via video calls.
Lastly, 5G SA roaming is also said to improve the immersive tech experience, where low latency is key. T-Mobile described the goal to is offer its users a seamless 5G experience after they land in another country.

Reliance Jio frames the partnership as a foundation for cross-network services, including enterprise and AI-enabled features that rely on SA capabilities such as network slicing. However, it is important to note that this 5G SA roaming capability is for T-Mobile customers on Jio's network.
This means Jio users in India will not experience the same benefit while travelling abroad, such as in the USA. That may follow, but it has not been stated yet. There is also no commercial timeline and neither company has said when regular subscribers can use it, which plans will include it, or how much it might cost.
That said, Syniverse did say its platform can support operators "from validation through production as more operators come on board". This suggests that more networks could be added in the future, potentially expanding 5G SA roaming to Jio customers travelling on T-Mobile and other supported networks.
