While Samsung's Galaxy S flagships have seen steady camera improvements over the years, the front camera has remained largely unchanged since the Galaxy S23 series. Well, that could finally change with the Galaxy S27 lineup, as a new report points to a long-awaited selfie camera upgrade.
Galaxy S27 Pro and Ultra Tipped to Feature a 16MP Front Camera
According to a report from GalaxyClub, Samsung could finally swap the long-standing 12 MP selfie shooter for a 16 MP snapper on the Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra. The report states that Samsung internally refers to the Galaxy S27 lineup using the model identifiers NM1, NM2, NM3 and NM4.
This further reinforces earlier rumours that Samsung is planning to introduce a new Galaxy S27 Pro model alongside the Galaxy S27, Galaxy S27+ and Galaxy S27 Ultra. Most importantly, the report suggests that the NM3 and NM4 codenames, belonging to the Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra, are the ones expected to receive the upgraded 16 MP selfie camera.
If accurate, this would mark Samsung's first selfie camera upgrade since the Galaxy S23 series debuted in 2023. The report also suggests that this new selfie camera on the Galaxy S27 Pro and Ultra could be a square sensor like the one on the iPhone 17. As a result, this could enable new camera features, such as the iPhone 17's Centre Stage mode, which automatically keeps users in frame during video calls.

It would be unfortunate if the standard Galaxy S27 and S27+ don't receive the camera upgrade, especially since Samsung may bring the Galaxy S26 Ultra's Privacy Display to all the Galaxy S27 phones.
That said, earlier reports have already detailed the Galaxy S27 Ultra and Galaxy S27 Pro camera upgrades, suggesting that both phones could feature new 50 MP telephoto and ultrawide cameras. If true, it could be the biggest upgrade to Galaxy S series camera hardware in over half a decade.
It's worth noting that these details should be taken with a pinch of salt since they're super early. With around six months to go before the Galaxy S27 series launch and amid the ongoing RAM crisis, Samsung may change its plans.
More concrete information should surface as we inch closer to the potential January 2027 launch date. Until then, all focus is on the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8, Z Fold 8 Ultra and Z Flip 8, which are widely expected to launch on July 22, 2026.
