Oppo recently confirmed that Realme UI and OxygenOS will be phased out in favour of ColorOS 17, essentially putting all three brands on the same software experience. If you were hoping that experience would completely embrace Apple's Liquid Glass-inspired interface as rumours suggested, it won't. Oppo's Design Director, Chen Xibo, has officially ruled it out.
No Liquid Glass on Oppo, Realme and OnePlus Phones
Responding to user suggestions regarding a transparent user interface on Weibo, Chen Xibo stated that the ColorOS development team is not in favour of fully transparent UI layouts. He cited that these elements heavily degrade text readability, making it harder for users to interact with the user interface.
He also elaborated that while the team may experiment with transparent layouts in a few areas of the operating system, there are no plans to introduce a widespread transparent theme, unlike the Honor MagicOS 11 update. Chen has previously confirmed that there will be no significant features in ColorOS 17, and it will mostly focus on ironing out the existing inconsistencies.
This design choice now carries significant weight across the broader ecosystem, considering the recent operational shifts. For those unaware, alongside OxygenOS and Realme UI being phased out, OnePlus recently shut down in the US and Europe.
This means OnePlus and Realme phones won't be getting the supposed Liquid Glass redesign either. While information on the new and upcoming ColorOS 17 features is scarce, users can expect the software to pack the latest Android 17 features, including improved Theft Detection and Factory Reset protection, enhanced HDR and more.
That said, the ColorOS 17 update should roll out to all the ColorOS 17-supported devices in the next few months, and the upcoming Oppo Find X10 could be the first to arrive with ColorOS 17 out of the box. Until then, stay tuned.
