How I Tested the Best Video Editing Apps for 2026

You can't really judge a video editor just by its screenshots, unless you've used it. To create this list, I installed each app on a Pixel 10 and Nothing Phone (3a) Pro to test the performance across different hardware.

I evaluated them based on ease of use, performance and feature set. I also paid close attention to the annoying factors of the apps like watermarks, intrusive ads and export limitations, and settled on these 8 apps.

Best Free Video Editors for Android and iPhone

There aren't many best free video editors for Android and iPhone besides Instagram Edits. Most video editors offer freemium features, meaning none of them are truly free. Therefore, this section consists of only one entry — Edits by Instagram.

Edits by Instagram

Instagram's in-house video editor Edits has gained immense popularity since its launch recently, and for all the good reasons. For starters, it brings all the basic editing features you'd expect from a video editor, plus seamless integration with Instagram, making it easier to export videos directly to Reels or Stories.

Features like trimming, cutting, filters, text and effects are all present. It also supports video sync based on the beat of the music. You can add captions, overlays and music from Instagram's own library, just as you could in Instagram notes. The app also gives you straightforward ability to select the export resolution and frame rate, alongside the ability to export in both 1:1 and 9:16 aspect ratios. Edits is available on both Android and iOS for free, and requires logging in via Instagram account.

Besides, if you want to start your creator journey on Instagram, Edits also has an Insights page that shows the views, reach and current followers, alongside videos with most views, likes, comments, shares and lowest skip rate. There's also an inspiration tab where you can check out the content created by others using Edits.

Great for beginners and intermediate users alike
Lacking in advanced features like key framing and cropping
Seamless integration with Instagram
Requires signing in to your Instagram account

Completely free to use

Best Video Editing Apps for Casual Users

If you rarely upload videos or you just started learning to edit them, you might not want the most extensive video editor out there. We recommend using Adobe Premiere Rush as it's catered to beginners who're getting started on video editing. For access to more tools, however, you can go for KineMaster.

Adobe Premiere Rush

If you're just getting started with video editing on your Android or iPhone, Adobe Premiere Rush is an extremely straightforward video editor that gets the job done. For starters, it gives you multiple timelines to edit your videos with ease. While it's not the most feature-rich video editing app, it more than makes up for it by being simple, while still packing all the necessary features that you'd expect from an editing app.

You can shorten the clips by dragging the ends directly from the timeline, separate audio from the timeline and even add your own voiceovers. Besides, there is a host of graphics to choose from, including a variety of effects and transitions, and the ability to change the duration of the same. You also get a decent colour grading tool set to adjust things like exposure, contrast, tint, highlights, shadows and more.

Lastly, Premiere Rush allows you in various aspect ratios, including 16:9, 9:16, 4:5 and 1:1, perfect for editing for a particular platform you want to post the video on. While the free version lets you export in 1080p source fps or 24, 25 or 30, the premium subscription gets you 4K 60 fps exports for Rs 3,100 a year. Besides, you also get more titles and graphics, more music, audio editing tools and auto-resize and reframe. While Premiere Rush may not have everything, it's still one of the best video editors for Android and iOS.

Best Paid & Premium Video Editors for Android and iPhone

While some of the apps on this list are free to some extent, all of them require you to pay for premium if you want to unlock more features. Fortunately, they're not very expensive (except one), and offer great set of features for the price.

VN Video Editor – Best Overall Video Editor

For those looking for the ultimate video editor on Android and iOS, VN is the way to go. The app is completely free and brings a comprehensive list of editing tools. You can export up to 60 frames, and the exports are usually very fast. The app also brings a Discover feed that you can take inspiration from, and a tutorial page to help you get started. The app does limit you to 100 projects in the free version, but upgrading to premium bumps it to unlimited, with no ads and encryption.
