Moving your photos from your iPhone to your laptop? Whether you are out of storage, want to back up your iPhone, or make it easy to revisit memories, transferring photos can be easy or quite confusing, depending on which method you go with. Be it Mac or Windows, there are multiple ways to achieve the same goal. So, keep reading to learn how to transfer photos from an iPhone to a laptop in this guide.
How to Transfer Photos From iPhone to Laptop: Step-by-Step Guide
There isn't a single "best" way to transfer photos from an iPhone to a laptop. It depends entirely on whether you are using a Mac or a Windows PC, how many photos you want to transfer, or if you prefer a wireless or wired method. To understand this, I looked up all the possible options on YouTube, Reddit, and Apple Forums, and based on my findings, here are the best methods for transferring photos.
Send iPhone Photos to Mac Using AirDrop
The best way to move photos between an iPhone and a Mac is AirDrop. It is wireless, seamless, and works across all Apple iPhones.
- Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both the iPhone and Mac. You can do this from the Settings app or Control Centre.
- Enable AirDrop on both and set it to Everyone for 10 Minutes.
- Now, open the Photos app on your iPhone and select the images you want to send.

- Then tap on the Share icon and select AirDrop.
- Next, choose your MacBook or Mac and accept the transfer on your laptop.

- You can access all the photos from Finder > Downloads on your macOS laptop once you receive them.
Transfer Photos from iPhone to Mac Using USB Cable
AirDrop works best for sending only a few photos. However, if you want to transfer hundreds of images from your iPhone to a Mac, then using a USB cable is a more reliable and faster option. You will need a USB Type-C-to-C cable if you have an iPhone 15 or newer model. Alternatively, use a Lightning cable if you have an iPhone 14 or an older device.
- Connect your iPhone to your Mac using a USB cable (preferably the cable that came with your iPhone).
- Once connected, unlock your iPhone and select Trust inside the "Trust This Computer" prompt.

- Now, launch the Photos app on your Mac laptop and select your iPhone under "Devices".

- Then choose all the images you want to copy by clicking on them and selecting Import Selected.

Transfer iPhone Photos to Windows Laptop Using USB Cable
Windows users can also use the USB cable method to quickly transfer photos from an iPhone to a laptop. It does not require any third-party apps since the iPhone only let you access the Photos folder on Windows. However, if your photos are stored in another folder, you can skip this method.
- First, connect your iPhone to your Windows PC using a USB cable.
- Now, unlock your iPhone and select Trust inside the "Trust This Computer" prompt.

- Open the Windows File Explorer app and go to This PC > Apple iPhone.

- Here, navigate to Internal Storage > DCIM.

- Locate the photos you want to transfer inside the subsequent folders (they may be named like 100APPLE, 202604_a, etc.).

- Choose your desired photos and copy them to a folder on your Windows PC.
Download iPhone Photos Using iCloud on Windows
Another way to save your iPhone photos on your laptop is by using iCloud backup sync. If you have iCloud backup enabled for your photos, you can simply copy and download them on your Windows PC. It is quite a straightforward process that many people don't know about.
- Download the iCloud app from Windows App Store.
- Then launch the app and sign in with your Apple account.
- During the setup process, click on Sync Photos on the "Sync iCloud Photos to Microsoft Photos" screen.

- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the rest of the setup process.
- Open the Microsoft Photos app on your laptop, and select iCloud Photos.

- Here, choose the photos you want to save, and click on the Move/Copy button at the top.
- Then select either Move to folder or Copy to folder based on your preference.
- Choose a local folder and the images will be transferred there.

Transfer Photos from iPhone to Laptop using Third-Party Apps
Besides the native methods that I discussed above, you can also use third-party apps to transfer a batch of photos from your iPhone to a laptop. Be it Windows or Mac. I typically use LocalSend, as it is the most reliable free option, but you can also use Snapdrop to do the same.
- Install LocalSend on both your iPhone and laptop (Mac/Windows).
- Connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi network.
- On your iPhone, open the Photos app, choose the images you want to transfer and tap on the Share icon.
- From the iOS Share menu, select LocalSend.

- Select your laptop from the "Nearby devices" section.
- Accept the transfer on the receiving device.

For me, this works even better than AirDrop and is a great option to send a large bunch of files wirelessly.
Having Issues Transferring Photos From iPhone to Laptop? Try These Fixes
If the above methods don't work or you're stuck, try these troubleshooting steps.
- Unlock your iPhone and “Trust” your computer: When you plug in your iPhone with your laptop via USB, make sure to tap on the Trust option, as it is required for your laptop to access photos.
- Check your USB cable and port: Use a certified cable that came along with your iPhone and try a different port.
- Keep iPhone unlocked during transfer: Ensure that your iPhone remains awake and unlocked so it does not interrupt the transfer process.
- Restart both devices: If you are facing random software issues, restart your iPhone and laptop to resolve temporary glitches.
- Update iOS and your laptop OS: To avoid compatibility issues, update your iPhone as well as the laptop to the latest available version and also check for any driver updates.
- Check available storage on the laptop: Low space can interrupt transfers, so check your storage and ensure that your laptop has enough storage for your photos.
- Toggle Wi-Fi & Bluetooth (for wireless methods): In case you are having issues with AirDrop or LocalSend, then ensure that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled and both devices are on the same network.
- Set AirDrop to “Everyone for 10 Minutes”: Lastly, make sure that your iPhone's AirDrop visibility is set to Everyone for 10 minutes.
This brings us to the end of this guide. There is no one-size-fits-all method here. But if you’re deep into the Apple ecosystem, then AirDrop and iCloud should be the routes you take. If you’re on Windows, then using LocalSend or a USB cable are your best options to transfer photos from iPhone to laptop. Once you find the method that fits your setup, transferring photos becomes a two-minute task.
