Summary

  • iPhone 18 Pro Max boasts a 2 nm A20 Pro silicon, a 7-core GPU and a 96-bit memory bus for faster gaming and AI tasks.
  • Both flagships share a 6.9-inch OLED screen, but the 18 Pro Max shrinks the Dynamic Island.
  • iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at Rs 1,64,900 in India, whereas the iPhone 17 Pro Max costs Rs 1,34,900.

Apple's latest iPhone 18 Pro has finally hit the market, and the number one dilemma for anyone looking for a flagship iOS experience is choosing between the brand-new iPhone 18 Pro Max and last year's iPhone 17 Pro Max. On the surface, the physical footprint hasn't changed much, but under the hood, Apple has completely revamped the camera hardware and added a larger battery. Here is a look at how the newest premium iPhone stacks up against its predecessor.

iPhone 18 Pro Max vs iPhone 17 Pro Max: Design

  • Both models stick to the established aluminium unibody frame and oversized camera module, retaining Apple’s newest signature look.
  • To fit a bigger battery and a new thermal vapour chamber, the iPhone 18 Pro Max sports a slightly thicker chassis and camera bump.
  • Apple has reduced the Dynamic Island's footprint on the 18 Pro Max, but the weight has increased to 249 grams.

From the back, you would be hard-pressed to tell them apart. Apple is reusing its aluminium unibody design with the same button layouts. However, the iPhone 18 Pro Max has put on a little weight to accommodate an upgraded internal cooling system and a larger battery for better sustained performance.

Turning both phones over, the differences are slightly more obvious. Although Face ID is not under the display as prior leaks suggested, the iPhone 18 Pro Max's Dynamic Island has shrunk. This design tweak frees up a bit more screen real estate and makes the display feel noticeably more expansive than the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

iPhone 18 Pro Max vs iPhone 17 Pro Max: Display

  • Both iPhones boast a 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with a 120 Hz ProMotion refresh rate.
  • The iPhone 18 Pro Max upgrades to an LTPO+ panel, which significantly boosts overall power efficiency.
  • Both boast 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness, but the iPhone 18 Pro Max gets a smaller notch.

If you strictly care about screen size and brightness, these two phones are pretty much even. Both offer a 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with a peak brightness of 3,000 nits. HDR video playability and outdoor readability will pretty much be flawless across both generations.

However, the iPhone 18 Pro Max moves to an LTPO+ OLED display, which is more efficient at managing the smooth 120 Hz refresh rate. It helps the phone draw less power when the always-on display is turned on, helping prolong the overall battery life of the device.

That said, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is going to be slightly better when it comes to content consumption. This is all thanks to the smaller Dynamic Island, which Apple has reduced by quite a bit.

iPhone 18 Pro Max vs iPhone 17 Pro Max: Hardware

  • The iPhone 18 Pro Max boasts Apple's latest 2nm A20 Pro chipset, versus the still very capable 3nm A19 Pro found in the 17 Pro Max.
  • The new A20 Pro chip packs a 7-core GPU and a wider 96-bit memory interface, increasing memory bandwidth by 50%.
  • Both phones come standard with 12 GB of RAM to easily handle the latest Siri AI shenanigans.
  • Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max comes with Apple's latest C2 modem with a Limit Precise Location setting.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is the definitive choice when it comes to performance. The latest Apple A20 Pro processor is based on TSMC's 2nm process, making it 20% faster than the A19 Pro processor in the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Besides, the addition of technologies like Heat Path Block and a more efficiently arranged core architecture in the sandwich via WMCM has led to an increase in efficiency.

However, the main highlight of the A20 Pro is its 40% better GPU and AI prowess. The A20 Pro features a new 7-core GPU and a 96-bit memory bus, which increases the amount of data the chip can process at once. This should make the iPhone 18 Pro Max the better phone when it comes to gaming and running Siri AI or other AI tasks.

Finally, the iPhone 18 Pro Max brings Apple's latest C2 modem, while the 17 Pro Max boasts the Snapdragon X80 modem. While we don't have the test results yet, the C2 modem is expected to perform on par with its Qualcomm counterpart. The modem also has a privacy feature called the Limit Precise Location setting that protects users' location data from carriers.

iPhone 18 Pro Max vs iPhone 17 Pro Max: Software

  • Both smartphones come with iOS 27 with the same set of features, Siri AI upgrades and Liquid Glass improvements.
  • The upgraded dual Neural Processing Unit (NPU) in the iPhone 18 Pro Max results in faster AI performance.
  • Both devices are backed by Apple’s long-term software and security support, but the iPhone 18 Pro Max will receive an extra year of support as the latest.

Thanks to the base RAM being the same on both the iPhone 18 Pro Max and 17 Pro Max, the daily software experience on iOS 27 will be identical. Both phones will run Apple Intelligence and the latest Siri AI without any issues.

However, the difference will lie in the responsiveness of these AI tasks. Since the A20 Pro inside the iPhone 18 Pro Max has a larger NPU, it will complete the AI tasks noticeably faster than the A19 Pro inside the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

iPhone 18 Pro Max vs iPhone 17 Pro Max: Camera

  • The iPhone 18 Pro Max finally introduces a variable-aperture main lens, handing users true physical control over depth of field.
  • Both flagships carry a triple-camera rear setup featuring a 48 MP ultrawide and a 48 MP telephoto lens.
  • The variable aperture lens has four stops: f/1.4, f/1.8, f/2.4 and f/4.0 for more creative shots.

Smartphone photographers will be happy to hear that the iPhone 18 Pro Max finally features a variable-aperture 48 MP primary camera. Users can now adjust the bokeh by controlling the amount of light that enters the camera by four stops, which should aid in better low-light shots and more natural bokeh effects.

The 48 MP fusion telephoto camera now has a larger f/2.2 aperture to let more light in. This means the sensor should get brighter and clearer images in low light, with noticeably less noise. The 48 MP fusion ultrawide and the 18 MP front-facing square 1:1 sensor with Centre Stage are identical to those on the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Beyond the beefed-up cooling system, Apple used the iPhone 18 Pro Max's extra thickness to fit a larger battery. The eSIM variant of the 18 Pro Max boasts a larger battery compared to the iPhone 17 Pro Max. As a result, the iPhone 18 Pro Max squeezes out 45 hours of playback on a single charge compared to the iPhone 17 Pro Max's 39 hours

To complement the larger cell, the 18 Pro Max also charges faster at 60W compared to 40W on the iPhone 17 Pro Max. When you pair that raw battery size with the efficient 2nm A20 Pro chip and the power-saving LTPO+ display, the iPhone 18 Pro Max should boast a substantial improvement in overall battery life over its predecessor.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max features a host of refinements and upgrades over the iPhone 17 Pro Max. A 2 nm chipset combined with a larger battery and a variable-aperture camera means it makes great strides in gaming and photography. For those who demand the absolute best, the phone may justify its even higher price.

However, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is far from obsolete and might be the better purchase for the budget-conscious. Since it shares the same 6.9-inch display and 12 GB of RAM with a still extremely capable camera setup, casual users will not notice any difference. If you want a massive screen and full access to Apple Intelligence without paying the newest flagship tax, the 17 Pro Max is still a stellar device.
