The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is the successor to last year's Z Fold 7, featuring a tall design with a slim build, triple cameras and a large 8-inch main display. Given that the two phones look identical on the spec sheet, it may confuse buyers whether to get the latest model or choose last year's version. Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra vs Galaxy Z Fold 7: Design and Build

The new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra does not look any different from last year's Galaxy Z Fold 7 in terms of design. Both phones look like identical twins side by side, with a long and slim design, weighing the same at 215 grams. Even the dimensions have not changed much, with the two devices measuring 8.9mm in thickness when closed.
However, the new Z Fold 8 Ultra is 0.1 mm thinner when opened at 4.1mm, compared to 4.2mm of the Z Fold 7. In terms of build quality, you will find Samsung's Advanced Armour Aluminium on both devices along with an IP48 rating for protection against dust and water.
The only big upgrade seen on the newer model is the new Flex Technology, which the company claims provides better display durability as well as a lower visible crease on the folding screen. Early rumours suggested that it should be almost as good as the Oppo Find N6.

The display has not changed from generation to generation. Both the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and the Z Fold 7 feature a large 6.5-inch 1080p AMOLED cover screen with a 120 Hz refresh rate. Meanwhile, the inner folding screen remains an 8-inch 1.5K AMOLED panel on the two models.
So no matter which device you pick, you can enjoy sharp visuals with punchy colours while watching movies or videos.
The only difference between the two phones is in display brightness. While the Z Fold 7 topped out at 2,600 nits. This was not ideal when trying to use the phone outdoors under sunlight, something we pointed out in our Galaxy Z Fold 7 review.
However, the Z Fold 8 Ultra fixes the issue with a higher 3,000 nits of peak brightness, which should be more visible in such conditions.

This is where the generational gap becomes evident. The newer Z Fold 8 Ultra comes with the powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor for Galaxy. This is the same chipset seen on the Galaxy S26 Ultra. In comparison, the Z Fold 7 packs the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor for Galaxy.
Neither of the two foldables will be a slouch in performance since both use flagship chipsets. So you can run multiple apps side by side or enjoy demanding games as you like.
However, the newer Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 offers better sustained performance, something I tested in my Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra review. This means that the performance won't throttle over long gaming sessions on the Z Fold 8 Ultra.
Both phones start with 12 GB of LPDDR5X RAM and go up to 16 GB. Even the storage variant starts at 265 GB and goes up to 1 TB, but the Z Fold 8 Ultra uses faster UFS 4.1 storage over the UFS 4.0 storage on the Fold 7.
So file transfer speed will be a bit better on the new device.

Another area where you will notice the generational difference is the software. The Z Fold 8 Ultra comes with the new One UI 9 out of the box, and it is based on Android 17.
On the other hand, the Z Fold 7 is currently running the One UI 8.5 update based on Android 16 and will get the next update soon. The beta is already available for One UI 9-eligible devices, so expect the stable update to arrive in a month or two to enjoy the new One UI 9 features.
Both phones get Galaxy AI features and Gemini integration, but new Gemini Intelligence features with app automations and Gemini Notebook are readily available on the Fold 8 Ultra.

This is a promising camera setup for the foldable phone, as it allows you to capture crisp and detailed shots in both day and night scenarios. Plus, unlike the regular Z Fold 8, which does not have a telephoto camera, you can take close-up shots of far-away subjects without much drop in quality.
The real upgrade is the 50 MP ultrawide camera on the Fold 8 Ultra compared to the 12 MP sensor on the Fold 7. It should deliver sharper wide shots and noticeably better detail in low light.
Selfie cameras stay at 10MP on both the cover and inner displays on both phones, and video recording tops out at 4K @ 60 FPS across all lenses, with 8K @ 30 FPS recording on the main and ultrawide sensors on both generations too.

The Fold 8 Ultra fixes both problems at once with a larger 5,000mAh battery and faster 45W wired charging. It should offer a meaningful upgrade in charging time while also offering all-day battery life.
Samsung claims that the Z Fold 8 Ultra can offer up to 27 hours of video playback time, which should be the same as the iPhone 16 Pro.

If you already own a Z Fold 7, then the Z Fold 8 Ultra is not an urgent upgrade. The design, displays, the main camera, and the day-to-day experience are identical enough that most people will not feel the difference outside of charging speed and battery capacity.
But if you are buying fresh, the Fold 8 Ultra is worth stretching for: the bigger battery, dramatically faster charging, improved sustained performance, and a full generation of software headroom with One UI 9.
The Fold 7, especially once its price drops following this launch, remains the smarter buy for anyone who wants the Ultra Fold experience without paying flagship-launch prices.
