Although the iPhone Duo launched just a couple of hours ago, it won't arrive sooner than mid-October and it won't ship with iOS 27. Instead, Apple's first foldable will come with iOS 27.1, which is expected to include several changes designed specifically for the iPhone Duo. But the timing also hints at exactly when iOS 27.1 will become available to eligible iPhones globally.
iOS 27.1 Update Could Come Sooner than Expected
In its official announcement for the foldable, Apple revealed that the "iPhone Duo will be available with iOS 27.1."
The iPhone Duo starts shipping on October 23, 2026. So, this means the iOS 27.1 update could be available well before that day. The exact date is still under wraps. But it could likely arrive around the time iPhone Duo pre-orders go live.
By comparison, iOS 26.1 didn't come out until November 3. So, the iOS 27.1 update is ahead of schedule by almost two weeks.

What Will the iOS 27.1 Update Bring
iOS 27.1 will include updated app layouts for the iPhone Duo, which will allow apps to leverage the full screen width of the inner displays.
On the other hand, older apps on the iPhone Duo will open in a compatibility mode. It may not let them fill up the entire screen, but it will at least prevent layout issues on the foldable. Even apps updated for iOS 27 may leave some unused space. But that will depend entirely on how the app is designed.
Apps will have to be built or updated specifically for iOS 27.1 to fully utilise the extra screen real estate on the iPhone Duo.
Apple also released the iOS 27 Release Candidate, which is the final beta update before the stable release of iOS 27. The recently launched iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will come with iOS 27, while the iPhone Duo will rock the iOS 27.1 instead right out of the box.
