Summary
- Google has officially pushed Pixel Tablet's OS update deadline from June 2026 to June 2028.
- The tablet will get five years of OS and security updates, just like Pixel 6, 7 and Pixel Fold.
- Google will roll out new features through Pixel Feature Drops with new Android versions for two more years.
Released in 2023, the Pixel Tablet was marketed as a home-focused smart device that could double as an Android tablet. Just like the Pixel 6 and 7 series, it was promised three major Android updates, but Google has now decided to extend its software support to keep the hardware relevant for much longer.
Pixel Tablet will get up to Android 18
The Pixel Tablet launched with Android 13 and was initially promised three years of Android updates, meaning Android 16 would've been its last update. However, that's changed as Google's support documentation notes a two-year extension and the tablet is now guaranteed Android updates till June 2028.

This is an excellent move by Google and great news for those who bought the tablet and were concerned about the hardware becoming obsolete. With two more updates, Google is bridging the gap for a tablet that was released before the brand announced the seven-year commitment with the Pixel 8.
That said, this isn't the first time Google has extended software support for its Pixel phones and tablets. In 2024, the brand announced that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series will receive two more years of major software releases after their supposed end of life, extending Pixel 6 updates till October 2026 and Pixel 7 till October 2027.

Beyond core Android version updates, the extension ensures that the Pixel Tablet also benefits from Pixel Feature Drops. These updates are responsible for bringing new software capabilities and keeping the user experience fresh.
This software extension also comes at a time when the Google Aluminium OS just leaked. While we're not sure if Google will use the Pixel Tablet as the testing ground for this ARM-based desktop push, there's a strong possibility that the device could inherit key features from the project.
With the support now lasting until 2028, the Pixel Tablet is perfectly positioned to adopt advanced desktop capabilities, which could potentially transform it from a simple smart home display cum tablet into a more capable productivity machine.
