Qualcomm Unveils Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 Chipsets for Mid-Range and Budget Phones

Qualcomm has announced two mid-range chipsets for budget phones in India at the Snapdragon For India event. The new Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 chipsets are aimed at making app launches faster and reducing screen stutter in the lower and mid-range Android segment. Qualcomm says the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 reduces screen stutter by 25% and makes 43% faster app launches.

Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 Specifications

The Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 is built on a 4nm process node and comes with Kryo CPU cores that can reach up to 2.6 GHz. There are four performance cores clocked up to 2.6 GHz and four efficiency cores that can go up to 2.0 GHz. Apart from that, its Adreno GPU is 21% faster than the previous-gen Snapdragon 6 Gen 4.

Qualcomm has also introduced some premium Snapdragon Elite gaming features on the new Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 chipset. It supports HDR gaming, Qualcomm Adaptive Performance Engine 4.0, Snapdragon Game Super Resolution, and Qualcomm Frames Per Second 3.0 technology.

Apart from that, you get AI-based Night vision, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0 and Qualcomm XPAN tech so you can enjoy uninterrupted wireless audio across rooms. Next, Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 is the first in the 6-series to get a Release 17 5G modem which supports FDD Power Class 2 for uplink, and it enables rapid upload speeds.

I recently compared Qualcomm and MediaTek 5G modems and concluded that in mid-range chips, Qualcomm needs to improve the upload performance. And it looks like Qualcomm is doing exactly that.

Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 Specifications

Now, coming to the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 chip, which is meant for budget Android phones. Qualcomm says the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 delivers 10% better power savings, reduces screen stutter by 25% and improves app launches by 43%. The Adreno GPU has seen a whopping 77% performance improvement over the last-gen processor and unlocks 90 FPS gameplay in the budget segment. 

The Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 is fabricated on a 4nm node and comes with two performance cores (clocked up to 2.4 GHz) and six efficiency cores (up to 2.0 GHz).

The new budget chip by Qualcomm has also received a Release 17 5G modem for faster speeds and widespread coverage. Qualcomm Smart Network Select 3.0 automatically connects to the strongest signal, and it's the first in the series to support Dual SIM Dual Active 5G.

In the ISP department, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 is improved for auto-focus, auto-white balance, auto-exposure, face detection and EIS. Not to mention, Qualcomm has added support for 96kHz music streaming too. Finally, you get Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.1 support.
