Copying text on Android is pretty simple, but copying a picture is a different story. Unlike the iPhone, Android doesn't give you a "Copy image" button that works everywhere, so the right method depends on where the picture is and which phone you own. The good news is that there is always a way to copy and paste a picture on Android and most of them take just a couple of taps. On that note, let us begin.
Why Copying a Picture on Android Is Not Always Simple
On a computer or an iPhone, you open an image, hit Copy and you are done. But Android has no system-wide copy button for pictures. Copy and paste has been part of Android for most of its history, but image copying was never unified in a similar way.
What you get instead is app and device-specific copy-paste options. Web browsers can copy images natively and Xiaomi and Samsung phones have this option into its Gallery app. Pixel phones also have a copy tool inside the app switcher. Everyone else has to take a screenshot to copy the image.
How to Copy and Paste a Picture on Android From a Web Browser
This is the one method that works on every Android phone because the copy option lives inside the browser rather than the Android OS. Here is how it works.
- Open the webpage with the image in Chrome or any Android web browser.
- Long-press the image until a menu pops up and tap on Copy image. The picture is now on your clipboard.
- You can long-press in an empty field and paste the image into Gmail, Google Keep, a chat or a document.
- Gboard users can tap on the image on the toolbar to easily paste the image right there.

How to Copy a Picture on Pixel Using the App Switcher
Google Pixel phones come with an underrated trick to copy images and it's available inside the Overview scree. You can copy almost any picture on your display, even from apps like Instagram that normally block image copying. It has been a Pixel-exclusive feature since Android 10 and it still works on the latest Android 17.
- Open the picture you want, for example in Google Photos or any app.
- Open the app switcher (swipe up and hold) so the app preview card is on screen.
- Tap the small image icon that appears on the recognised picture. Now, tap on Copy.
- Finally, switch to wherever you want to paste the image, long-press on an empty spot and hit Paste.

How to Copy and Paste Photos on Samsung, Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco Phones
Samsung, Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco phones let you copy a photo straight from the Gallery app without any extra apps. If you own any of these Android phones, this is the best option.
- Open the Gallery app and find the picture you want to copy.
- Now, tap on the three-dot menu in the top-right corner and choose Copy to clipboard or Copy.
- Now, long-press in any empty field and paste the image.
- If you are using Gboard, you can tap on the image on the toolbar to paste the image.
- On Samsung phones, the image is copied to your Samsung clipboard and you can paste it into any app that accepts images.

Samsung's own clipboard, which you can pull up from the Samsung Keyboard, also keeps a short history of recently copied items so you can grab it again later. By the way, you can further customise the Samsung Keyboard with your own backgrounds and themes while you are in there.
How to Paste a Picture on Android
Once the image is copied to your clipboard, pasting it is straightforward in any app that accepts images, such as Gmail, Google Keep, Google Docs or most note apps.
- Open the app where you want to paste the picture.
- Now, long-press on an empty text field and tap on Paste. That's it.
- If you are using Gboard, you can tap on the image on the Gboard toolbar to paste the image, even inside WhatsApp.

If the app supports image pasting, your picture will be inserted right away. Note that this will not always work in messaging apps like WhatsApp and you can't paste one picture on top of another inside a gallery app.
Set Up Gboard to Paste Images and Screenshots
The best way to paste pictures on Android is through the Gboard clipboard, which keeps a short history of recently copied images and screenshots. It comes pre-installed on most Android phones and you only have to set it up once.
- First off, bring up the Gboard keyboard and tap on the four-square grid icon in the left corner.
- Now, tap on Settings.

- Now, go to Clipboard and make sure these toggles are enabled: Show recently copied text and images in suggestions bar and Save recent screenshots in clipboard.

Going forward, whenever you copy an image or take a screenshot on your Android phone, open Gboard in any text field and tap the clipboard icon in the toolbar to paste it.
Things to Keep in Mind
Here are a few points that you should know if you want to copy and paste images on your Android phone.
- The Android clipboard holds only one item at a time. However, if you are using Gboard or Samsung Keyboard, you can access multiple copied items from the clipboard.
- Copied items clear after about an hour on Gboard. The Gboard clipboard history deletes copied images after roughly an hour unless you pin them and pinning keeps them indefinitely.
- Pasting directly in apps like WhatsApp doesn't work. In that case, use Gboard's clipboard toolbar to paste the image.
- Use a screenshot as a fallback. If nothing else works, take a screenshot of the image and copy that instead, which is a handy workaround on any Android phone.
And that is how you copy and paste a picture on Android. Copying images from a browser works great and so does image copying from the Pixel app switcher. I would highly recommend using the Gboard keyboard to paste the image system-wide on Android.
