Summary

  • Motorola started as an American company in 1928, but since 2014, its phone business 'Motorola Mobility' has been owned by Lenovo.
  • Most Motorola phones are made in China, but additional plants in India and Brazil serve their local markets.
  • You can check the country where your Motorola phone was manufactured by checking the original retail box or regulatory label inside Settings.

Many wonder about Motorola's country of origin and where its phones are made. In short, the Motorola brand is American by origin, but the phones you buy come from Motorola Mobility, which is owned by China's Lenovo. Basically, the story of where Motorola belongs has become complicated over the years, due to a split in 2011 and multiple ownership changes. So, if you are curious about where your Motorola phone is actually manufactured, follow our in-depth explainer below.

Motorola's Phone Business Now Belongs to China's Lenovo

Let's first understand Motorola's origin story. The Motorola company, also known as Motorola, Inc., was an American company. It was founded in 1928 in Chicago by Paul and Joseph Galvin as the Galvin Manufacturing Corporation. Its first product was a battery eliminator that allowed battery-powered radio devices to run on household electricity.

The company brought its first car radio in 1930 under the "Motorola" brand name. It was a mix of "motor" (motorcar) and "ola" (sound), and eventually, the company was renamed Motorola, Inc. in 1947.

From there, Motorola became a giant in wireless communications. It built the radio devices that transmitted Neil Armstrong's first words from the Moon in 1969 and launched the world's first commercial handheld phone, the DynaTAC 8000X, in 1983.

Motorola also launched iconic phones like the StarTAC and the Motorola RAZR in 2004. The RAZR alone sold over 130 million units and became a cultural phenomenon. But that original American Motorola doesn't exist as a single company anymore.

Over the years, Motorola couldn't keep up with Apple and Samsung in the smartphone era. So, in 2011, Motorola, Inc. officially split into two independent public companies: Motorola Solutions and Motorola Mobility. Motorola Solutions is the legal successor which still handles enterprise and public safety communications as an American company today. And Motorola Mobility handles the phone and consumer devices business.

Now in 2012, Google acquired Motorola Mobility, but quickly realised that running a hardware business was not its thing. So, in 2014, China's Lenovo entered the scene and acquired Motorola Mobility from Google. And that's how a Chinese tech giant ended up owning one of America's most iconic phone brands.

To sum up, Motorola started as an American company, but the Motorola brand that you and I know today -- technically, Motorola Mobility -- is now owned by China's Lenovo. Note that Motorola Mobility's headquarters are still in Chicago and the brand still designs phones from the US, however, the ownership is now Chinese.

Motorola has shifted its manufacturing base several times over the years. Back in 2013, when Google owned Motorola, the company started a plant in Texas and the Moto X became the only smartphone assembled in the US at the time. However, due to high labour costs and poor sales, Google shut down the plant by the end of 2014.

Now, under Lenovo, manufacturing shifted heavily to Asia. Here are the major manufacturing hubs of Motorola phones in 2026.

  • China: China is the primary manufacturing hub for Motorola phones today and it operates its largest production base in Wuhan. This is where most global Motorola phones including the flagship Razr foldables and Edge series are built. Motorola phones made here are exported to over 160 countries around the world.
  • India: India has become one of Motorola's most important manufacturing markets in recent years. Motorola phones sold in India are locally assembled by Dixon Technologies at its facility in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Motorola has also been one of the early beneficiaries of the government's PLI scheme. Motorola exported over 1 million smartphones from India in 2022 and the company has been ramping up exports to North America from its Indian facilities.
  • Brazil: Brazil is Motorola's third largest market globally, coming after India and the US. Motorola operates two factories in the country, one in Jaguariúna (São Paulo) and another in Manaus (Amazonas). These plants make phones primarily for the Brazilian and Latin American markets.

Apart from these countries, Motorola has smaller assembly plants in Argentina that serve the Latin American market.

Where Do Different Motorola Phone Components Come From?

Now, let's learn where the components inside your Motorola phone come from. Unlike Samsung or Apple, Motorola doesn't have its own subsidiaries for components, so it relies on external suppliers for almost every part. Here, I am using the latest Motorola Edge 70 Pro and the Razr Fold as reference devices to explain where the components come from.

ComponentOrigin CountryDetail
ProcessorTaiwan, USThe Edge 70 Pro is powered by the Dimensity 8500 Extreme chip, which is designed by MediaTek in Taiwan and also fabricated by TSMC in Taiwan. Even for Qualcomm Snapdragon chips, they are designed in the US but manufactured by TSMC in Taiwan.
DisplayChinaMotorola uses pOLED panels for its flagship phones, and these displays are primarily sourced from Chinese display makers. Lenovo has officially confirmed Wuhan Tianma and CSOT as key display suppliers for its Wuhan plant, both of which are based in China. BOE is another likely supplier for certain models.
RAM and StorageSouth Korea, USThe LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.1 storage on Motorola phones come from Samsung Semiconductor and SK Hynix in South Korea, with some units supplied by Micron (USA).
Camera SensorsJapanThe Edge 70 Pro uses Sony's LYTIA 710 primary sensor, and the Razr Fold uses Sony's flagship LYT-828 sensor, both made in Japan. Most Motorola flagships rely heavily on Sony sensors, while the budget Moto G series and some mid-range Edge phones use Samsung ISOCELL sensors from South Korea.
BatteryChinaThe battery inside Motorola phones primarily come from Chinese suppliers like ATL.
Cover GlassUSThe protective glass on the front of Motorola phones is Corning Gorilla Glass, which is made by Corning in the US.
5G ModemUS, TaiwanThe modem basically follows the chipset. Dimensity-powered Motorola phones use MediaTek's integrated modem from Taiwan, while Snapdragon variants use Qualcomm's modem from the US.

How to Check Which Country Your Motorola Phone is Made In

Now, let's go ahead and learn where your Motorola phone was manufactured. We have added two different methods that work for all recent Motorola phones.

Check the Regulatory Label Inside Settings

You can find the manufacturing country directly on your Motorola phone through the regulatory label inside the software. Here are the steps to follow.

  1. Open the Settings app on your Motorola phone and scroll down to About phone.
  2. Here, tap on Regulatory labels. On some Motorola phones, you may need to go to About phone > Legal information > Regulatory labels.
  3. Here, you will find the "Made in" or "Country of Origin" detail.

Locate Origin Country from the Retail Box

This is the easiest and most reliable option to check which country your Motorola phone was made in. Every Motorola phone box has a regulatory specification label printed on the side or bottom and it clearly mentions the "Country of Origin" or "Made in" tag.

For phones bought in India, you will usually see a "Made in India" label since Motorola assembles most of its phones locally. Note that this label refers to the physical assembly location, not the country where the phone was sold or where its components were made. Always check this label first if you still have the original box handy. Finally, if you want to check where Samsung phones are made, we have a dedicated guide ready for you.
