Writing Tools in Gboard were announced back during the Pixel 10 series launch as a Gemini Nano-powered feature and it has made its way to most Android flagships. The feature has remained the same for quite a while with no new feature additions since its release, but that might change in one of its future updates.
Gboard Writing Tools May Soon Get Custom Prompts
When digging through the latest beta release of Gboard, folks at Android Authority discovered a Custom Prompts feature. For those unaware, Writing Tools have been filled with predefined styles like professional, friendly and more, but a custom prompt box could help users tell the AI exactly how they want to modify it.

More impressively, Gboard is also becoming more context-aware. Google is testing features that could allow the app to read your on-screen conversations or scan your most recent screenshots to gain context and draft messages accordingly.
Google is also tweaking the way Gemini interacts with users. Internal guidelines suggest the AI is being pitched as an "expert writing coach". When drafting a message, the model will analyse your text and give you three dynamic, context-aware suggestions to improve the flow.

Instead of generic edits, these AI-generated buttons are expected to offer tonal shifts such as "make a joke", "use corporate jargon" or "sound less robotic". That said, to reiterate, these AI Writing Tools are expected to roll out as Google extends Gemini Nano's capabilities. And just like other AI Writing Tools features, these features should run completely on-device.
While there's no known timeline for the feature's rollout, considering it's still under development, Custom Prompts should roll out in a few months, starting with Google Pixel smartphones. That said, Google also revealed the Gemini Spark AI agent at Google I/O 2026, alongside an Apple Handoff-like Continue On feature arriving soon to Android 17.
