Summary

  • Google Vids is now free for all users, giving anyone with a Google account access to its AI-powered video editor.
  • Image-to-video, AI avatars and automated transcript trimming features are rolling out for Workspace and AI plan subscribers.
  • More updates like noise cancellation, filters and multiple aspect ratios for social media-friendly content are coming soon.

Google is now expanding access to its AI-powered video editor, Vids, making the tool free for all users. Meanwhile, powerful new generative AI features have been introduced for paying subscribers.

Google Vids first launched last year as part of Workspace and is no longer just for enterprise and education customers. Google Workspace announced in an official blog post that anyone with a Google account can now try the browser-based video editor at no extra cost.

The free version gives users access to all the basic editing tools, templates and collaborative features. However, the advanced AI-powered options remain exclusive to premium Workspace and AI plan subscribers.

For paying users, Google is also rolling out image-to-video generation powered by Veo 3, which can transform static images into short, dynamic video clips with audio. Previously, Veo 3 was made available to Indian users only via a Google AI Pro subscription.

Google Vids is also introducing AI avatars, letting users script and generate lifelike virtual presenters to deliver messages on-screen. Another major addition is automated transcript trimming, which can detect and cut filler words and pauses with a single click.

The company says more features are on the way, including background noise cancellation and customisable video filters. Vids is also said to get flexible aspect ratios like portrait and square formats for content creators to use on social media platforms.

According to Google, Vids already boasts over a million monthly active users. With the introduction of the free tier, this figure can only be expected to grow. From the looks of it, Google is positioning the tool as an accessible way for anyone to create professional-looking videos without all the expensive resources and advanced video editing skills.

With AI-driven video creation heating up the tech space, Google's decision to open Vids to everyone only makes sense. Besides, this also makes video production mainstream and as easy as writing a document in Google Docs, which is all the helpful for regular users.
