A Motorola user in India faced a rather alarming day when his "G" series smartphone suddenly caught fire and exploded inside his pocket out of nowhere. This is the second such major incident reported this year involving Motorola and it raises serious safety concerns.
Motorola Smartphone Explosion Incident Highlights Battery Safety Risks
On December 30, 2025, tipster Abhishek Yadav posted a short clip on X where a man's jeans pocket showed a large burn hole. It was reported to have been caused by the explosion of a Motorola G-series smartphone.

From the clip, it is clear that the point of origin of the explosion has been the smartphone's battery. It shows major damage to the rear panel and a completely fried display. The plastic has been severely melted and the screen also has black patches on it.
The good thing is, the owner managed to escape with minor injuries, in what could have been a major fatality. Moreover, the most shocking aspect of this incident is that the smartphone was allegedly sitting idle inside the pocket when this happened. Based on the dialect and accent of the people in the video, it looks like the report is from the state of Uttar Pradesh.

So, it is clear that the culprit here is an overheated Lithium-Ion battery swelling, which led to the explosion. At the time of writing, the exact cause of the battery explosion has not been stated. Motorola has also not made any comment on the matter.
This is not the first time a Motorola smartphone has been in the news for the wrong reason. A similar incident was also reported in Brazil back in February 2025 where a woman's Moto e32 literally caught on fire while sitting inside the back pocket.
A situation like this serves as an important reminder that while smartphones are ingrained too deeply into our daily lives, they are never foolproof. With battery tech evolving rapidly, it is high time smartphone manufacturers take adequate measures to safeguard the components inside and make future devices safer for everyone.
