Samsung's new display innovation hints that the company could bring a glasses-free 3D experience to the Galaxy S28 Ultra. After debuting privacy display in its latest flagship, the Korean tech giant could introduce a switchable 2D to 3D screen in its future flagship phones, tablets and other devices with minimal compromises.

How Does Samsung's New Glassless 3D Technology Work

This detail comes from a newly published paper by Samsung's Visual Technology team in collaboration with POSTECH in Nature, which talks about a new display innovation called the Metasurface Lenticular Lens. This is essentially an improvement over the previous Lenticular system used in older 3D devices.

Here, Samsung uses nanoscale structures to precisely control how light hits your eyes, allowing you to view 3D content on the display from varying angles without any issues. This was a big problem with older 3D displays, where you had to look from a particular angle to experience the 3D effect.

Samsung is trying to fix that problem, as it claims that this new technology will allow users to enjoy 3D content with up to 100 degrees of viewing angles. This layer is also very thin, coming in just at 1.2mm, so the company can easily implement it in their smartphones without adding a lot of thickness. Samsung has already tested it out on a 50 x 50mm prototype.

The company already introduced a groundbreaking innovation with the privacy display on the Galaxy S26 Ultra. So, it does not seem like a far-fetched idea to say that we could potentially see a switchable 2D to 3D screen come to the Galaxy S28 Ultra.

However, the reason glassless 3D failed is not only because of the viewing angles but also because it induced headaches and eye strain. So it's not clear whether bringing back this dead technology would be such a good idea or not.
