Apple has finally confirmed the long-standing rumours of Tim Cook's end of CEO era at Apple. The world's most valuable tech company has formally announced the end of Tim Cook era after 15 long years, paving the way for John Ternus to become the new CEO of Apple.
Tim Cook to step down as Apple CEO on September 1, 2026
In an official press release, Apple has confirmed that the organisation's board members and senior executives have unanimously agreed with Tim Cook's decision to step down as CEO. He will be succeeded by Apple's Senior VP of Hardware Engineering, John Ternus, with Cook overseeing the transition and handover till September 1, 2026.

For those unaware, Ternus has been pivotal in overseeing the development of Apple's hardware portfolio, including the iPhone, iPad and Mac as well as the Apple Silicon M-series chipsets. With over 25 years under his belt at Apple, Ternus is set to bring value to the CEO position with his hardware background and a more product-driven leadership for the future.
As for Tim Cook, he will transition from CEO to the position of Executive Chairman at Apple's Board of Directors. He will be responsible for overseeing select corporate initiatives and global policy engagement.
Moreover, as part of the restructuring, Arthur Levinson, Apple's non-executive chairman for the past 15 years, will take over the position of lead independent director on September 1, 2026. All in all, as we enter the John Ternus era, we are about to experience the first-ever Apple keynote, presided over by Ternus this September.
Hence, Ternus will be responsible for ushering in Apple's new future, which includes the iPhone Fold as well as the iPhone 18 series. However, the upcoming annual WWDC 2026 conference will likely be led by Tim Cook himself.
