The iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable smartphone, and it looks very impressive for a first attempt, and then I checked the price tag. In India, the iPhone Duo starts at roughly Rs 3 lakhs, making it the most expensive smartphone on the market right now. But if you check the price in other countries, it doesn't look that bad. So how much exactly are we Indians paying more for the iPhone Duo? Let's find out.

iPhone Duo Price in India Compared to Other Countries

The base 256GB iPhone Duo starts at Rs 2,99,900 in India, inclusive of all taxes. This makes it not only the priciest Apple phone ever but also the most expensive smartphone on the market. However, the real shock comes when you compare it to global pricing and see just how much extra Indian buyers are paying.

As you can see from the table, the iPhone Duo price in India is almost 40-50% higher than other mass markets.

USA

The U.S. pricing is the biggest eye-opener, as the iPhone Duo is priced at just $1,999. At the current exchange rate (checked on September 10, 2026), that translates to roughly Rs 1.91 lakh. That is around Rs 1.09 lakh cheaper in the U.S. than what Apple is asking in India. In other words, the iPhone Duo is 57% more expensive in India than the U.S. price.

However, do not forget that the price is accounted for without retail tax, which differs from state to state.

Canada

In Canada, the iPhone Duo will retail for CAD 2,999 for the 256 GB model, which is about Rs 2.07 lakh. Again, the iPhone Duo costs almost Rs 93,000 more in India than what Apple is charging in Canada.

Hong Kong

The Hong Kong price of the iPhone Duo is HK$ 17,999, which equals about Rs 2,19,000. This means we are paying ~Rs 80,000 more for the iPhone Duo in India than it costs in Hong Kong.

Malaysia

Converting the Malaysian price of the base iPhone Duo to INR gives us approximately Rs 2,23,000. Deducting the Indian price shows that the phone costs almost Rs 77,000 more in India

UAE

In Dubai, the iPhone Duo will set you back around AED 8,799, which translates to around Rs 2,28,000. So, you can still save almost Rs 72,000 if you decide to pick Apple's foldable iPhone from the UAE.

Why iPhone Duo Commands Such a High Price in India?

Now that it's clear that Indian buyers are paying more for the iPhone Duo, it is important to learn why Apple is charging us more compared to other regions globally. There are several reasons behind this extravagant pricing.

  • 100% CBU Import Status: Due to the complex hinge mechanism, Apple is not manufacturing the iPhone Duo in India, unlike other standard iPhones. As a result, the phone is shipped in India as a Completely Built Unit (CBU), disqualifying it from any local manufacturing concessions.
  • Import Duties and Taxes: The iPhone Dup is charged a 15% Basic Customs Duty along with a 10% Social Welfare Surcharge. Plus, the government charges 18% GST on top of the already-taxed import price instead of the base cost, adding an estimated Rs 65,000 purely in taxes.
  • Currency Volatility: Because Indian law mandates a fixed Maximum Retail Price (MRP) that cannot fluctuate, Apple charges extra upfront so it doesn't lose money if the rupee falls against the dollar later on.

You Can Go to Malaysia, Get an iPhone Duo, and Still Save Money

The iPhone Duo preorders start on October 16, 2026, and it goes on sale on October 23, 2026. So you have time to save up for the iPhone Duo if you are planning to pick it up.

But it would make less financial sense to pay 3 lakh directly to Apple. Instead, use that money for round-trip flights for two to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, stay for a couple of nights in a decent hotel, check out the Batu Caves after you pick up the iPhone Duo, and fly back to India, with some cash still left over.

For the same price, you would get yourself an international getaway and some new memories to go with your shining new iPhone.
