After loads of teasers, the iPhone 17e has finally arrived as the new entry-level iPhone. While the standard iPhone 17 pushes the boundaries with many pro-level features, the 17e makes a compelling case for itself with double the storage. But, does the price gap between them actually justify getting the cheaper 17e over the 17? Let’s find out.
iPhone 17e gets the same base storage and protection
- iPhone 17e sticks to a 60Hz refresh rate with larger bezels, but features the new Ceramic Shield 2 protection
- The phone gets the same 256 GB base storage as the base iPhone 17 but sticks to 8 GB RAM
Starting off with the main selling points of this year's "e" series iPhone, the iPhone 17e gets the same storage as the base iPhone 17, i.e., 256 GB. Besides, the protection at the front has been bumped to Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple claims is thrice as scratch-resistant and drop-resistant. While there are no design changes externally, iPhone 17e colours see a new Soft Pink shade that should catch many eyes.

The display on the 17e is still a 60Hz unit, while the iPhone 17 is definitely a notch ahead (pun intended). It features a better 120Hz Pro-Motion display, which was exclusive to the Pro models until last year. The 17e was rumoured to arrive with Dynamic Island, but that did not play out as expected. The bezels are still chunky and the old iPhone 14 chassis is starting to show its age compared to more recent flagships.
iPhone 17e performance is a slight downgrade
- Apple A19 on iPhone 17e has one less GPU core than iPhone 17's version
- iPhone 17 has a higher RAM (12 GB vs 8 GB) than the iPhone 17e
While the Apple A19 powers both iPhone 17 and 17e, the iPhone 17e likely uses a slightly cut-down version with one less GPU core. While you won’t notice a massive difference in day-to-day usage, the main differentiator here is the RAM.

The iPhone 17e gets 8 GB RAM, whereas the iPhone 17 adopts 12 GB. While 8 GB is fine, 12 GB on the 17 means everything from switching between the apps to using Apple Intelligence will feel snappier on the iPhone 17.
iPhone 17e should last slightly longer
- iPhone 17e features a larger battery unit of the two
- The budget iPhone should last longer, owing to an underpowered chipset and 60Hz display

The iPhone 17e has the same battery capacity as the iPhone 16e at 4,000mAh, while the iPhone 17 gets a smaller 3,692mAh battery. Coupled with a smaller, lower refresh rate display and a slightly less powerful processor, the iPhone 17e should last longer than the iPhone 17. Besides, the phone supports MagSafe and can charge at up to 25W wirelessly.
Should you consider the iPhone 17e over the iPhone 17?

If you’re looking for a budget iPhone and are strictly restricted in terms of budget, the iPhone 17e with its upgraded base storage, improved front display protection, and MagSafe is a great option. There’s a clear hierarchy here. If you don’t care about ultra-wide photos or a 120Hz screen, you might as well save the money. Although the design will feel dated, the cameras and their lack of flexibility won't make you happy.
