Wondering, "Which iPhone model do I have?" Then the answer is easier than you think. Knowing your iPhone is more important than people realise, as it tells you whether your device is eligible for the latest iOS update, helps you find the right accessories and replacement parts, and also comes in handy when buying a second-hand device. So, if you want a quick answer to which iPhone you have, then keep reading as we discuss how to check your iPhone model number in a few easy steps.
How to Check Model Number on iPhone
There are several methods you can use to check your iPhone model number, whether you have an old iPhone or a fairly new one. I have cross-referenced these methods throughout multiple online blogs, Apple forums, articles and Reddit threads and also tested them on my iPhone Air, iPhone 13 and iPhone SE (2020) and, based on my findings, found the following working methods.
Check iPhone Model Number Using Settings App
Starting with the quickest and most reliable method, you can check your iPhone model number from the Settings app. It works across all Apple iPhone models running iOS 13 or later.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone and go to General > About.

- Here you will find the Model Name and Model Number.

- Tap on Model Number to change between the technical model number starting with "A" (for example, A3517) and the Apple part number starting with "M" or "LL/A."
The A-series number is useful for checking part compatibility, verifying the authenticity of the iPhone, or looking up repair parts. The part number that ends with LL/A or HN/A indicates which country the iPhone was made in.
Find iPhone Model Number from Apple Account
Another method to check your iPhone model number is to look for it in your Apple ID device list. This is the alternative suggested by Apple forums and allows you to check all your current Apple devices.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone and tap on Your Name at the top.
- Scroll down to the list of devices connected to your Apple ID.

- Select on your iPhone from the list of devices connected to your Apple Account.
- Here, you will see the Model name alongside the Serial number and IMEI.

Note: This method shows the marketing model name, such as iPhone 15 Pro, rather than the technical A-series model number. For the full model number, use Method 1.
Look at the Back of the iPhone (iPhone 7 & Older)
If you are holding on to an old iPhone, like the iPhone 7 or older, then Apple used to engrave the model number directly on the aluminium back of those devices in small text near the bottom.
- Flip the iPhone over and look for a line of fine print near the bottom of the back panel.
- The model number will appear here, starting with the letter "A".

Since this method works even when the iPhone is switched off, you can use it to order compatible parts to fix it.
Check Inside the SIM Tray Slot (iPhone 8 to iPhone 13)
From the iPhone 8 to the iPhone 11, iPhone 12, and iPhone 13 series, Apple moved the model number from the back panel and engraved it inside the SIM card slot instead. You can use this method to check the iPhone model number only if you have a supported device.
- Use a SIM ejector tool to eject the SIM tray of your iPhone.
- Remove the tray and look closely at the roof of the SIM tray slot.
- The model number will be engraved on the inside wall of the slot, starting with the letter A.

Apple didn't continue this with the iPhone 14 and later, since US models became eSIM only and the SIM tray was phased out.
Verify Model Number Using Original iPhone Box
Your iPhone model number is also printed on the barcode label on the outside of its retail box, alongside the serial number and storage capacity.
- Find the barcode label on the back or bottom of the iPhone's original box.
- Look for the line that says Model, followed by an A-series number.

Check iPhone Model Number via Mac or PC
In case your iPhone is showing a white dot on the display and is unresponsive or completely cracked, then you can connect it to a PC to check its model number.
- Connect your iPhone to a Mac using a USB C cable and open Finder. On Windows, open iTunes.
- Select your iPhone from the sidebar.

- On the General tab, click on the model number at the top.

- It will display the model number, starting with the letter A.
- Click again to check the iPhone's IMEI and MEID numbers.

What is an iPhone Model Number?
Every iPhone has a model number that starts with the letter A, followed by four digits, for example, A2896 or A3575. This is assigned by Apple and unique to a specific iPhone model, covering its region, storage configuration, and colour.

A fake or refurbished device with mismatched internals will often have a model number that either does not exist on Apple's official list or does not match the physical device in front of you.

So, these are all the currently working ways to help you check your iPhone model numbers. These should help you verify your device in case the need arises. It is a good thing that Apple has offered so many ways for one to look for their model number, even when the device is switched off. However, I wish there was some physical indication like the older devices to find the model number. That said, I hope you found what you were looking for and thought this guide was useful.
