With Apple constantly shuffling around the menu and other important options in iOS, simple things like deleting a contact can seem like a confusing task. Not knowing that there are actually multiple ways to clean up your contact list, whether you want to clear out old numbers or just remove duplicates. So, keep reading this guide to learn how to delete contacts on your iPhone to get your contact list back in order.
How to Delete Contact on iPhone
With the recent iOS versions, Apple has shifted around the Delete button within the Contacts app, making it difficult for people to find it and delete their contacts. I also looked up people's queries and issues while trying to clear a contact from their iPhone and the solution provided by other users. Based on all that information, I have created a comprehensive list of methods with step-by-step instructions.
Delete an Individual Contact on iPhone
This is the most straightforward way to delete a contact on an iPhone and works on all Apple iPhones running iOS 13 or later. But since the Delete option is hidden within the Edit menu, a lot of people have trouble finding it.
- Open the Contacts app on your iPhone and select the contact you want to remove.
- Now, tap on Edit at the top right.

- Scroll all the way down to the bottom and tap on Delete Contact.
- To confirm your action, select Delete Contact.

Doing so will remove the contact from your iPhone permanently. If the contact is stored in iCloud, it will also be deleted from all other Apple devices signed into the same Apple ID automatically.
Note for iOS 26 users: There is a known bug where the Delete Contact option does not appear when you find a contact through the search bar. If this happens, close the search and scroll through the list to find the contact instead. The Delete option will show up normally within the Edit menu.
Long-press to Delete a Contact
You can also skip the Edit step entirely by long-pressing the contact name. This is a quicker method and works on most devices, including the latest iPhone 17.
- Open Contacts and long-press the number you want to remove.
- When a drop-down menu appears, select Delete Contact.
- Now, tap on Delete Contact again in the confirmation prompt.

Remove Multiple Contacts from iPhone
In case you want to quickly get rid of multiple contacts on your iPhone at once, then there is a clever trick you can try out to select them all in one swipe.
- Open the Contacts app on your iPhone and place two fingers on the screen just above the first contact you want to delete.
- Hold for a second until the contacts are highlighted in grey.
- Then, drag your fingers up or down to select multiple contacts.
- Once you are done, lift your fingers up and now long-press the selected contacts.
- Select Delete Contacts from the drop-down menu that appears.
- Confirm your decision by tapping on Delete Contacts.

Delete All Contacts on iPhone
If you don't want your old Gmail or Outlook contacts to continuously get synced to the Contacts app on your iPhone and want to get rid of them all at once, then you need to turn off account sync in Settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone and go to Apps > Contacts > Contact Accounts.

- Here, select the account (Gmail, iCloud, etc.) you want to disable syncing for.
- Turn off the Contacts toggle here to remove all contacts saved from this source.

This will remove the entire list of contacts that were merged from the other account on your device.
Merge Duplicate Contacts on iPhone
Apple has also added a built-in tool to find and merge duplicate contact entries without you having to delete them one by one. Here's what you need to do.
- Open the Contacts app and tap on All Contacts at the top.
- You should see a "Duplicates Found" card if iOS has detected any. Here, tap on View Duplicates.

- It will show a list of duplicate contacts. You can tap on Merge All to resolve all duplicates at once.
- To confirm your action, select Merge Duplicates again.

How to Restore Deleted Contacts on iPhone
In case you happen to accidentally delete an important contact, then you can easily restore it back to your iPhone in a few steps. However, you will need a computer for this method.
- Head over to iCloud.com and sign in to your Apple account.
- Then, click on Data Recovery.

- Here, select Restore Contacts.

- Now, finally click on Restore next to the contact you accidentally deleted.
- It should soon appear back in your iPhone's Contact app.

iPhone Contacts Not Deleting? Try These Troubleshooting Methods
If your contacts are not deleting properly or something unexpected is happening, here is how to fix it.
- Delete the contact from the source account: If a deleted contact keeps reappearing, it is likely being synced from Google or Outlook. If you have disabled account sync for Contacts in settings, and it still keeps happening, then it would be better to delete that number from the source account.
- Use a third-party app to clean duplicates: If the Merge Duplicates card is not showing up in the Contacts app, then a third-party app might help find and catch them more reliably.
- Toggle Airplane Mode on and off: If contacts deleted from iCloud are still showing on your iPhone, the sync may just need a nudge. Closing and reopening the Contacts app or toggling Airplane Mode usually gets the job done.
- Restart your device: Sometimes, the Contacts app may still show the number even when the contact has been deleted. This could be a cache issue, and you can restart your iPhone to fix this.
Deleting contacts on iPhone is straightforward for single entries, but it can get a little tricky when you are dealing with synced accounts or large batches. For most people, the long-press method is the quick and easy way to delete individual deletions. And in case you only wanted to remove contact entries from your call log, then you can simply delete your call history on iPhone instead.
