Summary

  • iOS 27 lets you generate AI wallpapers for your iPhone using the Image Playground tool.
  • You can create AI wallpapers directly from the Lock Screen or by using the Image Playground app.
  • AI wallpaper generation is currently only available in iOS 27 beta and Apple Intelligence-supported iPhones.

Finding the right wallpaper has always meant either scrolling through Apple's built-in stock selection and settling for something close enough, or digging through photos and third-party apps. iOS 27 changes that by bringing AI wallpaper generation directly into the Lock Screen picker. Just describe what you want, and the iPhone creates it on the spot. So, if you want to use this party trick too, then keep reading to learn how to generate wallpapers on iPhone using iOS 27.

How to Create AI Wallpapers in iOS 27

One of the new iOS 27 features includes the ability to generate custom wallpapers with Image Playground. Write down the kind of wallpaper you want, even if you have no prior artistic experience, and it will create one in seconds. This feature is powered by the new Image Playground tool in iOS 27 (currently in beta) and works across all Apple Intelligence-supported devices. So, let's take a look at how it works.

Generate AI Wallpapers from iPhone Lock Screen

Once you've installed the iOS 27 beta, you can directly enter wallpaper generation from the lock screen picker itself. Then apply your newly created wallpaper from there itself. Let's show you how:

  1. Long-press on the lock screen and tap on the + icon at the bottom right.
  2. Here, tap on Image Playground at the top.
Open Wallpaper Picker on Lockscreen and select Image Playground

That is how you change wallpaper on iPhone with a new AI-generated one. You can also describe any changes to the images before applying them if it does not look right.

Create AI Wallpapers Using Image Playground App

You can also directly generate wallpapers on your iPhone from the Image Playground app itself if you are on iOS 27. This method gives more control over the generated image before setting it as a wallpaper.

  1. Open the Image Playground app and tap the + icon at the bottom.
  2. Enter a description and pick a style.

Tips to Generate High Quality AI Wallpapers in iOS 27

If you have ever created an image using AI, you would know that the more specific the prompt, the better the output. A vague prompt like "an open field" will get you generic results. Here are some more tips to help you generate better wallpapers on iPhone using iOS 27's Image Playground.

  • Include a subject: A single focal point works better than a broad scene.
  • Describe the mood or lighting: Use words like "golden hour", "overcast", "neon lit", or "soft morning light" to set the tone.
  • Mention a visual style: Use "photorealistic", "minimalist", or "watercolour" to nudge the output in a specific direction.
  • Keep it simple for abstract styles: For patterns and textures, use shorter prompts like "deep blue gradient with soft geometric shapes" tend to work better.
  • Try multiple generations: Each generation produces a few variations. If the first result is not right, try again.

So here is everything that you needed to learn about generating a wallpaper in iOS 27 for your iPhone. I have tried this feature on my iPhone Air, and it works flawlessly. So much so that I wish it had been there from the start. But it is only limited to iOS 27, and if you want to try it now, it is only available on Apple Intelligence and iOS 27-supported devices, which leaves out iPhone 15 and older models.

FAQs

Q. Does AI wallpaper generation work on all iPhones?

No. Wallpaper generation with Image Playground requires Apple Intelligence, which is available on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 series. It is not available on iPhone 15 or older models.

Q. Can the generated wallpaper be used on both the Lock Screen and Home Screen?

Yes. When setting the wallpaper, there is an option to apply it to the Lock Screen, the Home Screen, or both. They can also be set independently.

Q. Does generating a wallpaper need an internet connection?

A Wi-Fi or data connection may be required for more complex generations, particularly photorealistic outputs. Basic generations can process on-device, but it would be preferable to have an internet connection.
