Apple has finally taken the wraps off iOS 27 at its WWDC 2026 keynote and the first developer beta is already live. With iOS 27, Apple has focused on improving stability and fixing bug fixes. In addition, the company has completely overhauled Siri and added a lot of AI features. If you want to try the new build right now instead of waiting for the public beta, here is how to install the iOS 27 developer beta on your iPhone.
Things to Know Before Installing the iOS 27 Developer Beta
Before you rush to install the iOS 27 developer beta on your iPhone, there are a few important things worth keeping in mind.
- iOS 27 is compatible with the iPhone 11 and newer. If you are using an older iPhone, you might get iOS 26 security updates for a while, but will not receive major upgrades. To find compatible devices, check out our iOS 27 eligible devices list.
- Make sure your iPhone is already running the latest stable build of iOS, which is iOS 26.5.1.
- Keep at least 15GB of free storage on your iPhone so the beta firmware has space to download and install the iOS 27 developer beta.
- Back up your iPhone to iCloud or a Mac before you do anything. Rolling back from a beta to the stable build is a complex process so having a backup is important.
- Remember that the features you see in this first beta may not make it to the final iOS 27 release in September.
- You don't need the paid Apple Developer Program membership just to install the iOS 27 developer beta. A free Apple Developer account tied to your Apple Account is enough.
How to Install the iOS 27 Developer Beta
Now that the iOS 27 developer beta is live, installing it on an iPhone is fairly straightforward. Just follow the steps below.
- First off, go ahead and register a free Apple Developer account. Visit the Apple Developer site and sign in with your Apple Account.
- If you already have a developer beta account, you don't need to sign up again. And if you are asked about payment, you can skip it since the free tier is all you need for beta access.

- Now that you developer account is created, go to the Apple Developer Program page and enroll your device.

- Now, make sure your iPhone is signed in with that same Apple Account. Then open the Settings app and go to General > Software Update.

- Once here, tap on Beta Updates and select iOS 27 Developer Beta from the list.

- Next, head back to the Software Update screen and pull down to refresh it.
- Now, the iOS 27 beta banner will pop up. Tap on Update Now and enter your passcode to request the update.
- Finally, accept Apple's terms and conditions when prompted and the download will begin.

- Your iPhone will now download the iOS 27 developer beta build. Tap on Install Now and it will reboot straight into iOS 27.

My Advice If You Want to Install the iOS 27 Developer Beta
I understand that people want to install the iOS 27 developer beta early on, but a developer beta is meant for testing, not daily use. Here is my advice if you want to install the iOS 27 developer beta.
Don't Install on Your Primary iPhone
First and foremost, don't install the beta on the iPhone you use every day. First developer builds are extremely buggy and you can run into broken apps, poor battery life, overheating and incompatibility issues. If you have a spare iPhone lying around, you can install the beta on that device.
Back Up First Because Downgrading is a Hassle
Always take a fresh backup to iCloud or your Mac before you download the iOS 27 developer beta. Going back to the stable iOS 26 build means restoring through Recovery Mode and an IPSW file, which is much more complex than a simple update. Even if things go south, you can always restore your data and settings without much hassle.
Have Realistic Expectations
Most of the headline AI features are limited to the iPhone 15 Pro and newer and some of them are not turned on in the first build yet. I would suggest waiting for the public beta in July, which is usually more stable than these very first developer builds.
iOS 27 Features: A Quick Recap

Here is a quick look at the important features Apple showed off with iOS 27 at WWDC 2026.
- Siri AI: iOS 27 has got a new Siri AI, which is built on new Apple Foundation Models made in collaboration with Google's Gemini. It can answer questions with real world knowledge, pull info from the web, generate content and work with your files.
- A standalone Siri app: A proper Siri chatbot app with text and voice modes where you can upload files and scroll through past chats. Your conversation history also syncs across devices via iCloud.
- Siri in the Dynamic Island: You can trigger Siri by saying "Hey Siri", pressing the side button or swiping down from the Dynamic Island. It shows answers as rich cards and can access personal context across all your apps.
- Smarter Siri actions: The new Siri can execute multi-step commands and has on-screen awareness. It can also pull personal context that lets Siri retrieve answers from your mail, messages and photos and even check your availability before booking something.
- New writing help: A "Write with Siri" button has been added on the keyboard and an "Ask Siri" option appears when you highlight. iOS 27 also brings a new system-wide grammar checker.
- Camera Siri mode: A dedicated mode that integrates Visual Intelligence and can scan nutrition labels into the Health app. You can also add business cards into Contacts and tickets into Wallet. The Camera interface is now fully customisable too.
- New Photos tools: Apple has added AI-powered Extend, Enhance and Reframe in the photo editor. The company has also significantly improved the Clean Up tool and a major upgrade for Image Playground and Genmoji is coming.
- A smarter Wallet: You can create a pass for your own tickets and gift cards. And bill-splitting lets you snap a receipt and send everyone their share through Messages.
- Safari upgrades: Organise Tabs now auto-groups open tabs by topic and a new start page brings favourites, bookmarks, your reading list and history in a single place.
- Smarter Shortcuts: You can now describe what you want a shortcut to do in plain English and AI will build it for you.
- iPhone Fold-optimised layout: The company has developed an iPad-style interface with side-by-side multitasking for the upcoming Apple iPhone Fold.
- Performance improvements: Apple is putting a heavy focus on performance and stability. You will see faster app launches, smoother animations and better battery life on iOS 27.
And that is how you can install the iOS 27 developer beta on your iPhone. The latest build is a great way to get an early look at the new Siri AI and everything Apple announced at WWDC 2026. That said, it's still early software and if you don't want to deal with bugs, wait for the public beta in July or simply wait for the stable release in September.
