Apple is reportedly set to revamp its Photos app with iOS 27, introducing a new suite of AI-powered editing tools under its Apple Intelligence umbrella. The update is expected to bring generative AI features to the native iOS Photos app.
Apple Intelligence to Transform Photo Editing with iOS 27
According to a report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is developing a slew of photo editing tools powered by Apple Intelligence for iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27. As part of the overhaul, Apple is also said to be introducing a dedicated "Apple Intelligence Tools" section within the Photos app's editing interface.
This new hub will house multiple AI-powered editing options designed to simplify complex edits into one-tap actions. The new features are said to sit alongside Apple's existing AI editing tool, Clean Up.

The report reveals that Apple's upcoming photo-editing tools will allow users to extend, enhance and reframe images using on-device AI models. This means users could expand backgrounds beyond the original frame, improve lighting and overall image quality and even adjust composition or perspective, all within the native Photos app.
These capabilities are expected to be processed largely on-device, aligning with Apple's privacy-focused approach to AI.
With this move, Apple appears to be doubling down on AI-powered creativity tools to better compete with similar features already available on Android phones. It appears iOS 27 could mark a significant step in making AI a core part of everyday photo editing.
This only makes sense, especially since a Gemini-powered Siri app is also on the way to transform the way iPhone users operate their phones.
Moreover, since reports have already suggested that Apple Intelligence features could include Visual Intelligence injected into the Camera app, Apple Wallet app and more, it makes sense for the Photos app to get a much-needed AI overhaul as well. So, all Apple Intelligence eligible devices should ideally be getting the upcoming AI photo-editing tools.
While Apple has not officially confirmed these plans, the report suggests the company is actively testing the features internally ahead of a potential debut later this year. We can also expect to see more details showcased at the upcoming WWDC 2026 event.
