Double-Tap to Sleep is one of the most requested Pixel features that we never got, despite reports of Google working on it in Android 16. However, new code strings spotted in the recent Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 update reveal that the feature may arrive very soon.
Double-tap to Sleep Is Finally Coming to Pixels
According to newly updated code strings spotted by Android Authority, Pixel phones will soon be able to double-tap an empty area on both the lock screen and the home screen to quickly put their devices to sleep.

The double-tap-to-sleep feature was initially discovered in the Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1 release back in June 2025. At that time, the gesture was strictly limited to the lock screen.
However, the recent teardown of the Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 buildreveals that the internal feature description has been updated to include both the home screen and the lock screen, instead of just the lock screen.
Besides, additional strings point to the feature having its own separate page in the Gestures section of device settings. Here, we can see a dedicated "Double tap to turn off screen" toggle.

The "Double-tap to turn off screen" gesture offers a really simple and quick way to turn off smartphones. This saves time and the hassle of locating and pressing the power button, especially for users with big phones and small hands.
The feature might greatly please Pixel users who've recently migrated from other Android phones. These include those who have experienced OxygenOS, OriginOS and more, which have the Double-tap to Sleep feature baked in for as long as we can remember.
While the feature is not yet live in the stable channel, its active development indicates Google has not abandoned the feature. And while we don't have any information about when it could arrive on Pixel phones, it may debut in one of the upcoming Pixel Feature Drops, so stay tuned.
