MagSafe has become one of the most universally praised features of the modern iPhone experience, and for all the right reasons. It spawned a massive ecosystem of chargers, wallets, cases and mounts, but a new rumour suggests Apple may abandon the MagSafe technology entirely on future iPhones.
Apple Reportedly Debating Removal of MagSafe from Future iPhones
According to Instant Digital on Weibo, there's reportedly a significant internal debate at Apple about the future of MagSafe. The leaker notes that when the magnets were first introduced with the iPhone 12, Apple took an aggressive stance on them. However, the same tech is now starting to waver.

Instant Digital also states that Apple's initial plans to bring MagSafe to iPads could be scrapped. The leak does suggest that no final decision has been made, but the mere existence of the MagSafe removal debate comes as a shocker, given how widely revered the feature is among Apple fans.
While the leak doesn't reveal anything about why Apple could be thinking about killing the feature, the most likely reason is the physical constraints of having magnets populated inside the iPhone chassis. Since MagSafe takes up significant space and adds to the manufacturing cost, Apple might want to remove it.
Latest rumours suggest that Apple is developing a Liquid Glass Display and working on the Glasswing project that will radicalise iPhone design. In that case, the magnets could hinder the feel and weight of the project, thus affecting the overall form-factor.
Apple recently spent a lot of effort bringing MagSafe to its cheapest phone, the iPhone 17e. Besides, the brand also handed the magnetic blueprints to the WPC to serve as a backbone to Qi2 technology. Scrapping the tech that has become a universal norm could hit back massively, and we hope Apple doesn't do it.
With the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Pro expected to come out later in 2026, alongside a new Apple Foldable and Apple Glasses, the rest of the year looks packed for the brand.
