The global smartphone market is facing a sharp slowdown, with shipments recording their lowest third-quarter total in over a decade.
Global Smartphone Shipments Decline 20% in 3Q26
According to an Omdia report, global smartphone shipments fell 20% Year-on-Year to 254.7 million units in Q3 2026. This makes it the lowest Q3 figure since 2013.
As per the report, rising smartphone prices have been one of the biggest factors behind this decline (our smartphone price hike tracker is good proof).
Distributors and retailers have also become increasingly hesitant about restocking smartphones ahead of the holiday season.
Higher device prices have increased working capital requirements, resulting in lower inventory levels and reduced shipment volumes.
Among the major smartphone manufacturers, Samsung retained its position as the world's largest smartphone brand, shipping 57.8 million units during the quarter. This represents a 5% YoY decline.
Its entry-level and mid-range Galaxy A series helped it maintain its lead, while the Galaxy Z Flip 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, along with associated trade-in offers, strengthened its premium portfolio.

Apple followed closely in second place, shipping 56.6 million iPhones. Interestingly, the company maintained flat YoY shipments despite the market downturn.
Strong demand in China and North America, alongside continued interest in the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, helped Apple maintain its position. Well, the iPhone 17 was the world's best-selling smartphone in Q2 2026, so there's that.
Xiaomi secured third place with 30.7 million shipments, registering a 29% YoY decline. Its shipments fell 20% in China and 28% in India as the company continued to adjust prices to protect its margins amid rising component costs.
Oppo (including OnePlus and Realme) ranked fourth, with 23.4 million shipments, down 39% YoY. Vivo followed in fifth place with 19.3 million units shipped, recording a 33% decline.
| Smartphone brand | Shipments (Q3 2026) | Market share | YoY growth |

| Apple | 56.5 million | 22% | 0% |

| OPPO | 23.4 million | 9% | -39% |
| vivo | 19.3 million | 8% | -33% |

Global Smartphone Market Could Decline Further in 2027
Looking ahead, Omdia expects global smartphone shipments to decline by 12% in 2026. Further price increases and limited room for promotional discounts could make the upcoming holiday season particularly challenging for manufacturers.
The research firm also expects the global smartphone market to contract further in 2027, although at a slower pace. Consumers are already increasingly delaying smartphone upgrades or considering refurbished phones.
Even Samsung announced certified re-newed programme and has started selling refurbished Galaxy phones in India via its official website.
According to Sanyam Chaurasia, Principal Analyst at Omdia, manufacturers are now prioritising profitability over aggressive expansion and market share gains.
Several brands are also adjusting RAM and storage configurations, reducing the number of available models and selectively absorbing higher component costs to remain competitive.
For example, the OnePlus 13s 16 GB + 512 GB variant launched in India a while back, giving buyers a higher variant to stay more future-proof.
Overall, with smartphone prices showing little sign of coming down anytime soon, the next couple of years could see consumers holding on to their existing phones for longer. Meanwhile, manufacturers rethink what they offer at each price point.
