Why Are Smartphones Getting So Expensive? The RAM Crisis Explained
To put it short, AI data centres are eating all the memory chips, and it's getting harder for smartphone makers to source memory components. The same DRAM and NAND flash that goes into your phone is also used in AI servers, and large companies like Google, Nvidia, Microsoft and OpenAI are buying up chip capacity at any price.
Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron are allocating resources to produce high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for AI chips and leaving very little for smartphones. Micron has gone a step further and is shutting down its consumer brand, Crucial.
In just three months, memory prices have seen around a 300% spike, and it continues to go up. Nothing CEO Carl Pei warned, memory module costs will go up by 5x by the end of 2026. Pei further said that brands now have to either raise prices by 30% or downgrade specs. For a deeper dive, I would recommend reading our explainer on why your next phone will cost more due to the global RAM crisis.
As for iPhones, the MRP price has not been hiked in India so far. However, consumers are seeing fewer discounts at offline retail stores as Apple is tightening dealer margins. You can read our full coverage of Apple's effective iPhone India price hike for more details.
