The freedom to install apps from outside official storefronts has always been one of the best things about Android. After the brand recently rolled out Advanced Work Flow for sideloading on the user side, it is now focusing on the developer side by rolling out the Android Developer Verification Program.

Android Developer Verification Begins Today

The first phase of Google's new Developer Verification is officially underway. Starting today, Android Developer Verification is rolling out to developers via the Android Developer and Play Developer Console. This requires developers to register and verify their apps ahead of the changes that Google will introduce later.

For those unaware, the need for verification stems from Google wanting to ensure better security and shield users from malware. By asking developers to verify their identity, the risk of users installing unknown apps from unverified developers on the Play Store could be greatly reduced.

Once the new system is fully implemented, app installation will entirely depend on the verification status. If you're downloading a verified app, the installation will progress normally. If not, Android will intervene and act upon the set of rules recently introduced in Android's new Advanced Flow.

Google has provided a clear roadmap for how these changes will be introduced to the public. It will start in April 2026, while early access will begin for limited accounts, including students and hobbyist developers will begin in June 2026. The global launch of Advanced flow and distribution accounts will follow in August 2026, while the entire thing will roll out globally in 2027 and beyond.

Fortunately for end users, nothing is changing right now. They can continue downloading and sideloading apps from official sources or third-party repositories exactly as they always have. More information about the rollout will be revealed as we inch closer to the full rollout, so stay tuned.
