Google has finally taken the wraps off its Android XR-powered smart glasses at the Google I/O 2026 conference. Made in collaboration with heavyweights like Samsung and Qualcomm, the Android XR smart glasses are built around Gemini AI to " unlock new experiences across headsets, glasses and everything in between."
In a blog post, Google states that there will be two types of intelligent eyewear: audio glasses that provide spoken assistance directly into your ear and display glasses that overlay visual information in real-time.
Google has also partnered with iconic eyewear brands Warby Parker and Gentle Monster to create stylish, comfortable frames. Launching in late 2026, these audio glasses are packed with advanced multimodal Gemini capabilities.

By simply using the "Hey Google" wake word or tapping the frame, users can access an array of contextual AI features. From asking about cloud formation to translating menus instantly and getting turn-by-turn navigation, the Android XR smart glasses can do it all.
Not too long ago, we also learned that Gucci was making smart glasses with Google, so the Android XR platform could very well be utilised by other fashion brands in this way.
XREAL Project Aura Announced as the Android XR Heavyweight
While Google and Samsung focus on lightweight lifestyle glasses, AR pioneer XREAL took the stage at I/O 2026 to cater to power users. The company officially confirmed that its wired Android XR glasses, known as Project Aura, will launch globally before the end of 2026.
Project Aura features a massive 70-degree FOV powered by high-fidelity OLED displays. Unlike standalone audio frames, Project Aura acts as a lightweight mixed-reality powerhouse, delivering immersive 180 and 360-degree YouTube experiences and interactive Google Maps overlays.

At the event, XREAL also demoed Aura's unique ability to connect to laptops via DisplayPort, projecting a three-dimensional AR workspace with full Gemini support and "autospatialisation."
To accelerate the software ecosystem, Google and XREAL also announced the Android XR Developer Catalyst Program. Starting today, developers can apply at g.co/dev/catalyst to get early access to Project Aura hardware and dedicated creation tools. While retail pricing remains under wraps, XREAL has made it clear that Android XR will be the core foundation for its next-generation AR devices.
With compatibility locked in for both Android and iOS devices, Google is building an incredibly open, AI-first wearable ecosystem. Between fashionable audio frames and robust mixed-reality displays, 2026 finally seems to be the year for Android XR smart glasses to truly shine.
