Nothing's next major software update, Nothing OS 4.0, is just around the corner. The brand has now dropped a teaser video, revealing some of the exciting new features that are coming to elevate Nothing Phone users' experience.
The official Nothing handle on X has posted a 1:08-minute-long video teasing some of the big upgrades coming to the Android 16-based Nothing OS 4.0. While the video has managed to stack a lot of new features within the short clip, the Nothing Community post from Rob, the brand's Community Manager, has clarified all of them.

With Nothing OS 4.0, the brand is keeping minimalism at the heart of the OS experience. The brand claims that the upcoming update will be "extra minimal for maximum usability". It is said to be a mobile experience, "that feels effortless, intuitive, and uniquely human".
The update is expected to bring a more consistent colour palette usage with red, white, grey, yellow, green and more colour theming across buttons, labels, toggles, apps and more. Rob claims that the new update is designed to enhance everyday life without getting in the way. It is said to be "simple, elegant, and quietly powerful".

Even the lock screen clocks are getting a new minimal font, which will help the overall UI deliver on that minimalistic experience. Nothing OS 4.0 is also bringing a much cleaner and fluid quick settings experience with enhanced resizable toggles and customisation features.

Aside from the fine-tuned design language, Nothing is bringing a new AI feature, which is probably the first of its kind. While it is AI-related, it is not AI-based. With Nothing OS 4.0, users will be able to use a new Start AI analysis option to gain insights into which AI is the most used on the device.
It will create an AI dashboard which will show information like the most used AI models, usage percentage and more. This new feature will make use of the Essential Space and what appears to be OpenAI's open-sourced automatic speech recognition (ASR) model, Whisper AI.

Also, finally, Nothing OS 4.0 will support pitch black dark mode. A new Extra dark mode option will help users "extend Nothing OS’s signature dark aesthetic into an even deeper look". With Nothing OS 3.0, only the biometric page got a deep black makeover. Now, the entire OS experience is set to get the same treatment.
Additionally, the floating icon option now will support up to two apps with what appears to be new icon identifiers for them. It is not immediately clear what the new icons indicate. Nothing claims that this new implementation will allow users to switch between tasks faster without breaking the flow.

Speaking of flow, with Nothing OS 4.0, the overall app opening and closing experience is improving. It is said to boost speed, responsiveness, and overall smoothness across the system. Even new photography features are making their way via the OS update.
Nothing is supercharging its TrueLens Engine to deliver an upgraded camera and gallery experience. Users will gain more controls, presets and a much more intuitive layout which will seamlessly blend across the OS experience.

Apart from this, NothingOS 4.0 is said to bring heaps of general improvements like responsive lockscreen AOD, refined brightness toggle, stronger connectivity and improved stability and new features to the Glyph Matrix of the Phone (3).
That said, the Android 16-based OS update will first hit Nothing OS 4.0 eligible devices very soon. The first Open Beta update could be right around the corner, as the brand has already confirmed the Nothing OS 4.0 release date for Q3 2025. The update will first hit the Nothing Phone (3), followed by the Phone (3a) series and CMF Phone 2 Pro.
