Summary

  • Qualcomm has partnered with Lenskart to launch AI smart glasses in India powered by Snapdragon XR.
  • The smart glasses could be using Meta's Llama 3.2 model to answer questions in real-time.
  • Most details as well as exact launch date of the AI-powered smart glasses is under wraps currently.

In Qualcomm's XR Day event today, the chipmaker had a few announcements about bolstering XR innovations in India. The firm demoed AI-powered smart glasses that can answer queries on the fly, alongside announcing a partnership.

Qualcomm is partnering with Lenskart to drive it's XR vision for India forward. The firm showcased new XR glasses whilst shedding light on its AI capabilities, including answering questions in real-time, just like the Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses and the newer Oakley Meta.

Qualcomm's General Manager of XR, Alex Katouzian, took the stage to showcase its AI capabilities. The smart glasses run an SLM (small language model), which in this case was Meta's Llama 3.2, and it was able to answer things like "The distance between the Earth and the Moon" and "Recipe for Fettuccine Alfredo".

Commenting on the partnership, Qualcomm India's Senior Vice President, Savi Soin said:

India is leading a transformative shift in how reality is experienced. Qualcomm Technologies envision a future where smart glasses become as integral to daily life as smartphones, seamlessly handling everyday tasks. Snapdragon platforms are engineered to deliver a balance of sleek, lightweight design with powerful functionality, making smart glasses practical and intuitive for everyday use.

He also said that the future partnerships would help the vision of Viksit Bharat to empower workers and transform education in remote areas.

Lenskart's Phonic glasses were the firm's first "smart" tech glasses, featuring built-in speakers, ability to activate your phone's default voice assistant, and with a claimed seven hours of battery life. However, with Qualcomm in the game, the firm might try to compete with the Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses.

Although the event had Lenskart's CEO Peyush Bansal, it did not reveal any information about these upcoming glasses. Therefore, it's too soon to predict when we may see the first iteration land in the market. Stay tuned as more information about the glasses could be revealed in the coming months.
