ChatGPT-maker OpenAI has teamed up with the IndiaAI Mission to launch OpenAI Academy India. This development marks the expansion of OpenAI’s education platform to countries outside the US.
OpenAI Academy hosted an online event titled "Future Skills for India" on Thursday to announce their partnership with the IndiaAI Future Skills Mission. This mission is a digital training initiative led by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). The academy targets the "next generation of students, developers, and mission-driven organisations" and trains them with tools to help them "build responsibly with AI."
IndiaAI and OpenAI signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU), and as part of the joint venture, OpenAI Academy India will offer both digital and in-person skills training to the growing community of learners in the country. During the initial phase, the academy will offer courses in English and Hindi but will eventually expand to regional languages.
India is one of the most dynamic countries in the world for AI development, with adoption and innovation accelerating at a remarkable speed. We’re proud to partner with IndiaAI to launch OpenAI Academy India and help more people gain the confidence and skills to use AI meaningfully in their work, communities, and lives.
— Jason Kwon, Chief Strategy Officer, OpenAI
Key highlights of this initiative include:
- OpenAI will provide educational content inside IndiaAI Mission's Future Skills platform.
- This content will also be hosted on iGOT Karmayogi platform for use by government officials.
- OpenAI Academy will conduct webinars and workshops across six major cities and hackathons across seven states.
- It will offer $100,000 in API credits to 50 IndiaAI Mission-selected startups or fellows.
- The initiative will help up to 1 million teachers learn the proper use of generative AI tools.
OpenAI Academy hosts a myriad of guides and tutorials to help users master generative AI and develop tools with it for students, educators, developers, businesses and organisations. With this expansion, it should strengthen the growth of AI and its responsible usage in India.
