Summary

  • Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold didn't manage to survive the durability test in JerryRigEverything's latest video.
  • The tri-fold being only 3.9mm thin, failed to maintain its structural integrity when it was bent backwards.
  • The Galaxy Z TriFold is the first triple folding Samsung phone and it costs 3,594,000 won (approximately Rs 2,20,000) in South Korea.

Earlier this month, Samsung became the second smartphone brand in the world to introduce its triple-folding smartphone. The Galaxy Z TriFold is an engineering marvel that demands an uber-premium price tag and very careful handling. The latest JerryRigEverything video was able to highlight the fragility of the tri-fold quite well.

Samsung's Galaxy Z TriFold has "handle with extreme care" written all over it

As is the case with Zack, he started his video by putting the Galaxy Z TriFold through his set of customary durability tests. All was going well until it was time to bend the tri-fold. That's when all hell broke loose. Not only did it snap in half and break almost instantly, but the inner 10-inch folding display also died almost instantly.

Now, while this might seem surprising, it was more than expected. Samsung has made the Galaxy Z TriFold only 3.9mm thick at its thinnest point. For reference, this is exactly the same size as that of the USB-C port on the tri-fold. It barely fits.

Hence, such a thin frame has obviously left no room for structural integrity. Not to mention that the placement of the 5G antenna bands has also created certain break points on the tri-fold's body. Also, the Galaxy Z TriFold is officially the first Samsung folding phone to fail the YouTuber's bend test.

However, aside from the obvious bend test failure, the Galaxy Z TriFold managed to deliver a pretty good folding phone durability and endurance. The outer 6.5-inch screen scratched at level 6 of the Mohs scale of hardness.

Samsung has even embedded a sensor inside the hinge of the folding part which houses the main cameras. JerryRigEverything's video showed that when folded from the wrong side, the smartphone vibrates and produces a loud siren noise with growing intensity to warn the user.

Hence, it is clear that while the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold is definitely a feat of engineering, there is still a long way to go for folding phones to achieve the same level of reliability as that of a normal slab phone. It gets even more noticeable when the price factor is brought into question. The Galaxy Z TriFold costs a whopping 3,594,000 won (approximately Rs 2,20,000) in South Korea.
