When it comes to display innovation, Samsung has been at the forefront of bringing new display tech to the table. From being the pioneer in folding phones to the newest Privacy Screen with the Galaxy S26 Ultra, the South Korean brand has been pushing boundaries left and right. Now, a new report suggests Samsung is working hard to make rollable display phones a real thing.

Samsung Files Patent for Rollable Display Phone

Samsung has recently filed a new display patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, revealing a rollable display phone concept with a movable rear camera mechanism. It is an extension of the brand's 2023 rollable phone filing and now has been updated with ongoing R&D and schematics.

As it is evident from the above image, the filing depicts a normal slab phone with a display that expands from the side. The camera island is attached to the rollable display itself, making it mobile. However, it is unclear from the image how thick or tall the smartphone will be.

Also, a big challenge will be to fit all the components inside a limited space since the rolling display will also need to stay rested inside the body when not in use.

To give us a clear idea as to how the phone might look in real life, tech publication WearView has collaborated with leaker @xleaks7 on X to draw up some unofficial mockups for the phone. It helps visualise the phone as a real Samsung smartphone and also gives a good idea of how it might look from the front.

It reminds me of the unreleased LG Rollable smartphone, which was expected to debut way back in 2018, but was scrapped at the last moment. Now, with Samsung actively developing a rollable display phone, even after almost 8 years, it shows the promising nature of this future product category.

Moreover, back in 2018, Samsung also had a scroll-like design for rollable displays. Back then, the patent filing was for a rollable display accessory and not a smartphone. Hence, in the past few years, it seems like the South Korean brand has figured out a way to make a full-fledged rolling display phone.

That said, as it is with concepts and patent filings, they rarely make it to the mass market. Hence, it is hard to say if Samsung wants to launch a rollable folding phone in the next couple of years. Samsung's Display division has already showcased numerous rollable display concepts, but none of them have materialised as a full-fledged smartphone yet.
