Over the past few years, India has emerged as one of the top hubs for digital scams and fraud. With over 25 lakh incidents reported in 2025 alone, Google has ensured that every Android phone in India is protected from fraudsters and bad actors by introducing new features to its spam protection network. It is now reportedly working on a new Verified Caller feature, which can tackle spoofed calls in the future.

Google Aims To End Spoofed Calls with Verified Caller

Android Authority has uncovered a new Verified Caller feature in Android's internal code, suggesting Google is working on deeper system-level protections against scam calls. The feature is tied to Android's Play System Integrity framework and works at the core level rather than as a standard over-the-air update.

With Verified Callers toggled on, Android phones will be able to deflect spoofed scam calls by allowing the system to identify DNO (do-not-originate) numbers and alert users of potential scam calls. For context, DNO numbers are publicly listed phone numbers of organisations and businesses, which makes it easier for customers to reach out. However, these numbers are usually not meant for outgoing calls; they are designed to receive only incoming calls.

Scammers usually target these numbers to place calls to victims and scam them in the process. So, currently, if a publicly listed number has been spoofed and a customer or person tries to contact the DNO number, it will be rerouted to the scammer instead of the actual business it belongs to.

With Verified Caller, Google will be able to cross-check DNO numbers with incoming calls and alert users of potential spam. A major benefit of this feature will be the system-wide implementation, which means that the Verified Caller feature will work with third-party calling apps, such as well like Truecaller.

That said, at the time of writing, it is unclear when the Verified Caller feature will rollout to Android users. It could arrive with upcoming Android 17 beta builds or as a Google Play System update to all Android phones that support Google's Spam Protection Network.
