Summary

  • WhatsApp adds Strict Account Settings, a one-tap mode that enables its strongest privacy protections.
  • Key controls are automatically locked, including group invites, unknown calls and media from unsaved contacts.
  • The WhatsApp Strict Account Settings feature is for high-risk users and is rolling out to both Android and iOS.

Not every WhatsApp user faces the same level of risk. While end-to-end encryption protects messages by default, certain users like journalists, activists and public figures often require stronger safeguards. That's exactly where the new WhatsApp Strict Account Settings feature comes in, bundling advanced security features into a single, easy-to-enable setting across iOS and Android.

How WhatsApp Strict Account Settings Feature Works

Strict Account Settings on WhatsApp can be enabled directly by heading over to Settings -> Privacy -> Advanced in the app. At its core, the mode functions as a "lockdown-style" setting which, once enabled, allows WhatsApp to automatically enforce the strictest available settings.

These include blocking media and attachments from people not saved in your contacts, disabling link previews, silencing calls from unknown numbers and significantly tightening who can add you to groups. Essential protections like two-step verification are also turned on and cannot be disabled while the mode is active.

In addition to these front-end changes, WhatsApp highlighted that it is rolling out improvements under the hood to boost security even further. For example, WhatsApp is now using the Rust programming language for parts of its media handling infrastructure. This move is to reduce memory-related vulnerabilities and make it harder for malicious files to exploit the app.

While the new settings provide a powerful layer of protection, WhatsApp stresses they are optional and not necessary for all users. For most people, the messaging platform's standard end-to-end encryption and existing privacy controls continue to provide a solid defence.

However, for users concerned about targeted cyberattacks, the WhatsApp Strict Account Settings feature simplifies the process of hardening an account by automatically applying multiple protections with a single action.

WhatsApp Strict Account Settings will be rolling out gradually over the coming weeks to both Android and iOS users. Those interested can simply head over to the respective app stores and update the WhatsApp app to the latest version and get the update.
