Meta continues to refine the WhatsApp experience with a steady stream of new features and improvements. From the new Channel Admin Status updates feature to the paid WhatsApp Plus subscription, the messaging platform has introduced several additions to the platform. Now, WhatsApp is testing a long-requested 'log-out' feature that allows users to temporarily disconnect from the service without deleting the app.
WhatsApp Log out Option Rolling out to Android Beta Testers
As reported by WABetaInfo, Meta is now testing a dedicated log out option which will allow WhatsApp users to conveniently disconnect from the app without needing to uninstall it. The update is currently rolling out to a handful of beta testers and is part of the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.26.21.9 update.

This will be the first time since WhatsApp has offered a dedicated log-out option, bringing it on par with other Meta platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Those who have received the update can click on the three-dot menu to head over to the Settings page and find the log out option inside the Account section.
It rests just below the Delete account option and is highlighted in red colour for ease of understanding. Once logged out, users will be prompted to the WhatsApp homepage with a log in option. The process is said to preserve chat data as well as store the login credentials on device to help users log back in without any hassle.
However, before users can log out completely, WhatsApp will suggest alternative measures to reduce the app usage without completely logging out. It provides five main options, namely - Add account, Lock app, Mange notifications, Free up storage and Backup chats.
While the add account option promoted WhatsApp multi account support which allows users to switch between two different accounts seamlessly, the Lock app option urges them to use an app lock to securely lock the app and enter a dedicated passcode, PIN or pattern every time the app is accessed
Similarly, the Manage notifications options allow users to limit the notification flow without needing to log out completely. Also, with the Free up storage and Backup chats options, users can first delete large files to prevent app uninstallation and are urged to keep their chat backups up to date in case they decide to uninstall the app or log out.
That said, it is clear that WhatsApp is treating app logout as the last resort and actively encourages users to explore other options. However, the presence of a dedicated log out option can allow users to completely disconnect from the app for as long as they want and log back in at their own pace and convenience.
