WhatsApp has been steadily improving its web version, with group calling long topping users' wishlists. Well, it seems like our prayers have been answered, as the feature has now surfaced in a beta build, hinting that a wider rollout may be just around the corner.
WhatsApp Web prepares for a major calling upgrade
Spotted by WABetaInfo, the feature is currently in development and was discovered in the code of the beta build for WhatsApp web. It brings a voice and video calls overlay inside group chats, which web users can conveniently use to communicate.

As it is evident from the above image, once the feature is live, WhatsApp web will gain a new voice and video call toggle inside group chats. It will be placed at the top, beside the group name, similar to what we already have on Android and iOS.
Users can conveniently click on it to immediately start a call or switch between voice and video modes. The best part about this feature is going to be the seamless cross-platform connectivity, the report claims. This means that both Android and iOS users will be able to hop on web calls.
It even indicates that web users will be able to share dedicated call links and even schedule calls for a future time. However, to ensure call quality, WhatsApp is said to limit the participants to 32.
That being said, since this feature is in the pipeline, we will know more details about how it actually works once the early rollout begins. It is no doubt going to be a very handy feature, especially for those who prefer to connect via WhatsApp web in both professional and personal settings.
