The Samsung Keyboard is hands down one of the most customisable keyboards on Android. Be it features or appearance, you can change every aspect of the keyboard. Samsung Keyboard comes with built-in dark mode support and offers four different themes as well. However, many users are confused about the steps and are looking for a quick way to enable dark mode on Samsung Keyboard. In this tutorial, we have added two different methods, so let's check out the instructions.
Does Samsung Keyboard Have a Built-in Dark Mode?
Yes, Samsung Keyboard has a proper dark mode built right into One UI. In fact, Samsung phones come with four distinct keyboard themes, including Light, Solid Light, Dark and Solid Dark. The Dark theme gives you the standard translucent dark keys with a subtle border, while Solid Dark hides the key borders for a cleaner look.

The Samsung Keyboard dark theme automatically gets activated when you enable system-wide dark mode. That said, Samsung doesn't offer a separate "follow system" toggle like Gboard. It means the keyboard's appearance is integrated with whatever your system theme is unless you manually change it. I have covered both approaches below so let's go ahead and check them out.
How to Enable Dark Mode on Samsung Keyboard
This is the quickest way to turn on Samsung keyboard dark mode. The moment you enable system-wide dark mode, the Samsung Keyboard automatically switches to its dark theme. Here are the steps to follow.
- Launch the Quick Settings panel on your Samsung phone by swiping down twice on the home screen.
- Now, tap on the Dark mode button (marked by a moon icon) next to the brightness slider to turn it on.

This will enable dark mode on the Samsung keyboard as well as throughout One UI.
Apply Samsung Keyboard Dark Theme Without System Dark Mode
If you don't want your entire One UI to go dark but still want a dark Samsung Keyboard, you can choose a dark theme manually. Note that you must be on light mode in order to use Samsung Keyboard's Theme option. Here is how to do it.
- Open the Settings app on your Samsung phone and select General management.
- Here, tap on Samsung Keyboard settings.

- Next, select Theme under "Style and layout" and choose Dark or Solid dark.

There, you have it! Now, the Samsung keyboard will stay dark across every app even though the rest of the UI and apps will still be on the Light theme. I personally prefer the Dark theme because it offers borders just like on Gboard.
Enable High Contrast Dark Keyboard on Samsung Phones
Samsung Keyboard also offers a High contrast keyboard for those users who have a hard time reading in dim lighting. It increases the dark contrast and adds borders around all keys. Here is how to activate high contrast dark keyboard on Samsung phones.
- Open Settings and move to General management > Samsung Keyboard settings.
- Now, scroll down and enable the toggle next to High contrast keyboard.
- After that, open it and choose White letters on black keypad. You are done.

And that's pretty much everything you need to know about Samsung Keyboard's dark mode. For most people, simply turning on system dark mode is enough. However, if you want a permanently dark keyboard without changing the appearance of the whole UI, you can manually select Dark theme as well. You can also use Good Lock on your Samsung phone to further customise the keyboard with different backgrounds and visual typing effects.
